The Shins - Port Of Morrow - Recording

I bought The Shins - Port Of Morrow on vinyl about a week ago and can't stop listening to it. This is probably one of my favorite albums on first listen in quite some time. I listened to the album all the way through several times now. I even made a 1 bit 5.6 MHz transfer on my Korg MR 1000 and I've been listening to it on my Q701 headphones before I go to sleep. The album sounds great on my speakers and the headphones.

The mix and production on this album is very nice and I would love to learn more about the production and recording of this album. If anyone knows anything I would love to learn more. I'm curious about the recording of the tracks and what gear was used, what space it was recorded in and also the thought process behind the recording approach. I would especially love to read about how it was mixed, the gear used and the philosophy of mix choices.

One thing that I really like about this albums mix is the separation of elements and the sounds scape where sounds pop out of no where at times just like complimentary colors on a canvas.

Well done to all those involved, what an amazing achievement of excellent songwriting, superlative recording quality and taste!

Sounds much better than earlier albums - more aggressive and upfront. I think that is partly due to different band members too, and the fact that James Mercer was able to hire a producer from the outset. The last album had Joe Chiccarelli, but he was brought in to fix up tracks Mercer had already done by himself in his home studio in Portland. This one was produced by Greg Kurstin, who's also worked with big name pop acts.

The drums in particular are quite tasty on this. Much more punch and force...

Sorry I can't help with details or particulars of the recording process - I'd like to know too.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention! What a treat! An album of sublime invention and emotion. Beautifully crafted melodies, lyrics which make you want to know what the songs are about, arrangements which make each repeated listening a new joy. Familliar and strange at the same time. Production completely serving the artistic intention. This deserves to be a future classic. An album to fall in love with/ to.

My new reference album for mixing pop/rock, although I like the songs on the last album more. This album however is very cleverly produced.

Vocals

I also wonder how there can be so many sounds and everything heard so clearly in the mix here with so much going on.... even when listening digitally.

I find the vocals most impressive. they sounds so crisp and clear yet so warm and intimate. What kind of preamp/Microphone is being used here?!?!?!

From what I can tell, it was recorded in LA at Greg Kurstin's (home?) studio. Here's an article with Greg with his '09 Lily Allen collaboration. Things could've changed gear-wise, etc. 2 years later when Port of Morrow was recorded, but a decent read nonetheless:

An article about P!nk, but pic of Greg and James in the studio (name that rack gear!):
