If I go all analog...help me begin

Hi
I can get an Otari 16-track, 1" machine for around $500. If I do get this, what else do I need? I don't have a board or anything. I only have a few pair of pres as outboard gear. Excuse my lack of knowledge in analog recording! It seems like an amazing deal, but it would be pretty stupid if it just sat there like an unused dish washer.

A microphone and a mix deck. As for mics, anything will do. For mixdown, almost anything ..two-track, like Tascam 42, which has balanced in, and is half-track.

Guidance from the old git on getting all Anal...... log

An Emt Plate Rev or two.
A binson ecorec or two.
An MXR Phaser for that itchicoo park thing.
A labirinth with speakers and Mic's like Abbey Rd for flange FX etc.
About four GB Spring Revs.
Eight quality analog Compressors 4 x Drawmer 1960s. or Urei, Gates, Altec ETC.
A decent desk with motorised penny and giles faders. and a fat patch bay,
a lot of patch cords and hardest of all an analog automation system all locked up with phase lock loop to a 1/2 " two track for mastering and flying stuff in after all you will need yucky digital to generate SMPTE reliably.

And thus the analog era came, at long last, to a final end.

I'd get a nice desk I could use for tracking AND mixing.

But, then again, I'm British and think you Yanks with your fancy pre for each track are a bunch of weirdos

You need an in-line console with 24 or so tracks, and a mix down deck. Then you're gonna look for compressors and FX. Then a 2" machine, then more mics, then some outboard EQ, then, more comps, then more mics, then newer FX, then new Monitors, then a bigger space, then a bigger console, then...then....then....

then sell it all for a protools rig making sure to get every single last plugin used on 'Mix it like a Record'

or

all you need is Roland cosm modelling and you'll have all the guitar amps and mics in the world

Nah, for a 2" sixteen track he wants a 1/2" mixdown deck.

Preferably with a 30 IPS option as well as 15

I'm using a 2" 16 MM1200 @ 15ips and mix to an Ampex 1/4" @ 15ips...it frikkin rocks. BIG and DEEP sounds that aren't obtainable any other way (30 ips is quieter but it doesn't sound as P- H - a - t).

A board and the cables to connect the two are the first two things you would absolutely need.

If you can find a Yamaha PM1000 24 channel, or a PM2K, you would be sittin real nice.

That's the best advice I've seen on this thread. I remember those days. I'm mostly digital these days and though I may need a valium and a shotgun, back then I needed a valium, a shotgun and a boatload of cash for the independant techs that frequented my establishment! Don't miss that for even one second.
