The Pensado's Place thread, share some highlights ...

I have to say I love this show, I started watching it a year ago and now I'm listening to it on my headphones every week at work when not working on an important project. I thought I put together some little tips and tricks I picked up from some of the guests on the show (and from the man himself); Just some simple (and sometimes not so simple) things that are good to be reminded of.

Please feel free to fill in some more stuff that made a difference to you.
Keep in mind, of course, this is just my recollection/interpretation of what was being said by these people.

Cheers

Jack Joseph Puig: You can use the Waves TransX on acoustic guitar, manipulate the attack and release to create a groove

Dave Kutch: the two frequencies where you find the transients (in mastering) are 80 Hz and 5 k

Pensado: Automate the master fader and increase with 1 dB (felt rather than heard) in the chorus section, automate an EQ with a HF boost

Charles Dye: When the low mid feels muddy, mute the kick and bass and listen for other channels that have energy there

Pensado: Use two reverbs with slightly different settings and pan hard left/right to clear out the middle. Pitch shift the vocal up one octave before the reverb for effect

Ken Scott: Cut 200 Hz and boost below that for better sounding kick and bass

Steve Duda: In dance music (four on the floor), put the snare/clap about a 64th note before the beat

Simon Franglen: On synth strings, use two different reverbs (eg hall/plate, hall/cathedral) and make sure you use early reflections

Dylan Dresdow (latest episode #59): Try something new (he was discussing reverse delay)...if it doesn't work then don't use it. It doesn't matter that what you tried wasn't right for the track as it's all valuable learning experience and skill development.
Absolutely great series of programmes. Hats off to David and Herb. I like the comic tension in the studio.

The keychained bass from kick trick is neat. Saw it first on Pensados. JJP (jerk or not) had an interesting comment re compression. He uses it to change Feel & rhythm rather than volume.

Youtube always searches the number correct which now is #79

So I type in google youtube pensado #79 and that works the best for me.

It is Ryan Hewitt. That is the new episode I think.

I totally agree, I just love that show!!!

To be able to enjoy this great content on a regular basis and taking part of stories from such a huge crowd of passionate mix engineers free of charge in high definition is an act of pure love and for that Dave Pensado earns my greatest respect! That show is the best thing that has ever happened to mixing, it takes mixing to a whole new level, it provides openness and harmony into the music society and becomes a critical building block for music production all over the world to continue growing in a beautiful way.

Some of the shows are legendary and classic, like for instance that one with Steven Slate from Steven Slate Drums, I really enjoyed that show when he forced his company into some privately owned castle by bribing the owner's daughter, followed by an audition with 20 drummers and full house that week! But nothing beats the show with Manny Marroquin, I mean that show was just nailing it from start to finish! You know when a mixer at that level goes into philosophical discussions about the role of emotions in music it just rocks...for sure! Manny is so playful it's incredible!

I also really liked the show with Eric Sarafin aka "Mixerman", that show was just dead honest and totally relevant in every way! I really loved it when he said he doesn't even want to go into details about why Pro Tools never worked out for him (saying that when Avid is the show sponsor is cool), how all of the native stock Pro Tool plug-ins are lame and how he cannot understand how engineers can put plug-ins on the mix bus, saying that to Dave who really doesn't mind putting a plug-in or two on the mix bus, it rocks...

Also that show with Kevin Augunas was very interesting: "Dave, I don't see mixing as part of the process"... comments like that just have to be embraced you know...!

Pensado's place is simply the coolest project ever...! I just appreciate, appreciate, appreciate it... forever...

I could not be a bigger fan of this show! I've learned so much from the ITLs... It would be impossible for me to write it all down! A couple highlights would be getting to hear Dave's approach to mixing such a broad variety of modern instruments (specific synth bass approach etc) and clearing out low end / exploring the kick and bass relationship.

HUGE thank you to Mr. Pensado for sharing his legendary knowledge, experience, and industry relationships with us!

The segment where the Larrabee assistants were interviewed was cool. Those guys are the next Dave Pensados and Manny Marroquins so it was cool to get an insight to what it takes to get there.
