Wired's "Super Producers" article...

Not sure how many of you here read Wired magazine, but this month they have an overview of the music industry's "super producers" who now "Rule the Music Industry".

on-line version below
(thanks Pan)

The rulers have spoken!

I read that article. I didn't think there was any substance. It was a show-and-tell of producers that iPod carriers could recognize.

I have nothing against ProTools, but all of those fellas come off as glib know-nothings. I don't think record production has anything to do with "making songs" and instant demos of song structure changes. Of course, the way Wired threw the article together, much of those little interview bites probably lost much of their proper context.

Maybe it's my skewed, cynical outlook on the democratization of production technology, but don't you get the impression that Wired wanted nothing but "Whee! You can do it so easy! Everything rocks!" You know, the kind of message they use to open up every issue of Sound On Sound.

Not trying to be argumentative here. But honestly, I thought the article was spot-on.

How much elaboration do you need? You boot up PT, and get creative. Make some magic. That's what all those people do. Their track records speak for themselves.

Anyone who's not familiar with Dan Nakamura should check his stuff out. That dude's got some serious Kung Fu.

Felix is more underground, but ANY urban club DJ will tell you he's got the Kung Fu. Asses move when da housecat hit the table.

Thanks for posting that, Pan.

Nakamura gets new sounds from obscure old equipment. ("The Telefunken U47 is one of the greatest mikes ever made.")
Yeah, that's a really obscure one.

Don't hate. Step your game up. Why the disrespect? They are succesful in a way that all of us hope to be. You may not enjoy their music or as others say do not "recognize" them. The fact is they do not recognize us and won't until we step up our game.

How can someone writing a big article about the top producers forget about Dr Dre...
Nice to see Nigel Godrich though...

They talked mostly to people whose music I don't consume. I'm a 'rock' guy, what can I say. I do dig the Missy Elliot stuff, but I don't own any of it. I like the Radiohead stuff, and I think Goodrich does some cool stuff. I have sworn off of Butch Vig since that Rolling Stone article. I’m absolutely mortified to see the Matrix is going to work with Mooney Suzuki!
