Where to buy 703/705 fiberglass in Canada?

Hey all,

Does anybody know where I can buy OC fiberglass insulation in Canada? Preferably in Calgary as I could just go pick it up instead of paying shipping. It's gotta be cheap... and .. erm ... real.

Thanks.

Hey Matthew. I'm pretty sure I read on the John Sayers forum that Owens Corning doesn't sell 703 / 705 in Canada. Someone recommended Roxul RHT40 mineral wool as an alternative because it specs out pretty close, it's quite a bit cheaper and you can get it at Home Depot. I was actually going to do some acoustic treatment this week so I might try it out. Anyone else tried this?

Here's the website: http://www.roxul.com/sw10392.asp

Craig.

Hey man... thanks for that. As you can see, I finally found a place!

I too would love to hear from anyone who's tried it. Is it all that close to 703/705?

Also, when insulating walls for soundproofing to the outside world, does anybody know what the best kind/specs of general insulation to buy is? The only concern here is blocking as much sound as possible to neighbours. Thanks :-)

Here's the only guy I found in Canada off John Sayers site. He's in Ontario but might be able to help you out.

I found it locally here in Regina so I bet you can find it in Calgary just as easy. All I did was call around to the industrial building supply places until I found someone who had it. If you inquire at Home Depot, they will look at you like you have 8 eyes on your head when you ask for OC 705.

Edit: I should mention they will have to order it for me and I would have to committ to a bundle, but it wasn't too crazy pricewise. I was just pricing some out about a month ago.

I special ordered some through an industrial heating and air conditioning company here on Vancouver Island. It was pretty pricey though and a real pain to get.
For my last round of acoustic treatment I went with ROXUL "Safe n' Sound" instead. Waaaay cheaper and in-stock at the local home depot. As far as I know, roxul is just as effective as 703, but it is far less rigid and as a result, somewhat more difficult to work with.

Not sure what shipping will cost you, but Ready Acoustics states they'll ship anywhere on the globe.

Hmm. I could be wrong but I'm not sure that any kind of insulation will make a huge difference towards sound proofing. 703 or Roxul would definitely be better than regular pink insulation but there are a number of other things you can do that are way more effective - resilient channel, mulitple layers of drywall, floating rooms, staggered studs, etc. Check out this link for some general ratings on different construction techniques. Just click on STC chart when you get there.
