SM81 -10db rolloff, on OHs?

Should I be using my -10db rolloff on my SM81s when I have them as overhead mics?

Only if you are pegging the input meters without it. I've not needed the -10 with SM81's until it gets close to a drum. The output level is relatively low compared to some other condensers. I suppose it depends on where they are placed overhead and how loud the drums are in the room. But, either way, if the levels are good, why would you need the pad?

I generally flip the pad on when using 81's for OH. I like the way it hits the pres better in most cases. If that sounds too "clean", I'll take the pads out and let the inputs to the pres sweat a little more.
