Dumb patching question

Should I go out of my lunchbox directly to the patchbay then to interface?

Or should I go from lunchbox to interface then go line out to the patchbay then back to interface?

IT DOESN'T F'ING WORK!!!

Lunchbox --> Patchbay --> Interface

In fact everything should be connected to your patchbay so you can patch whatever you want wherever you want, that's the whole point of having a patchbay.

Is there a scenario where you can put your patchbay between your mics and your pres?

Sure...

Mic -> Patchbay (mic tie line) -> Outboard Pre -> Patchbay (Console Channel Line Input) -> Pro Tools ...

That's cool, cause i always had a chain in mind that was:

Mics -> snake <-|WALL|-> snake -> patchbay -> outboard pres -> Aurora16

with an option to maybe patch pres to a comp/eq before they hit the converter

i've been reading some patching threads but i must admit they're a bit too technical for me and i get lost

It's been said a thousand times but if you put your mic through a patchbay it's safer if the patchbay uses xlr connectors.

If however you absolutely want to use a 1/4 or bantam patchbay, you've got to make sure that your phantom power is OFF before patching your mic in, otherwise while you'll insert the 1/4 jack there will be a short time when the positive will touch the ground and negative, creating a short-cut and risking to damage your equipment.

i have heard that, but assuming i disengage phantom power from all my pres when i patch mics to them, there should be no problems right?

Exactly. I believe you should not have a ground buss on your patchbay where your mic input will be though.
