mix question...falling from sky like rain?

I have a tinkly bell tone that a keyboard player played that is very arpeggiated in a metal/rock mix and I want to make it sound like its falling from the sky like rain. I have the pan automated to different places for each note and have tried some volume and verbs but how do I get the relatively same tone to a falling effect from top to bottom in the sound field with each passing measure?

Cool idea, I like it!

Have you tried any effects like stereo phasing?

the more bass and dryer (verb) something is the closer and lower it appears to the listener - so the opposite is true for high end and weter (no pun intended)

work from there

I think a really fun effect to try would be a descending downwards pitch shift with feedback.

I have a Kurzweil that does this, but there are other pitchshifters that have feedback, so you can set up a delay, and each repeating delay gets shifted further down in pitch.

A Barberpole Phaser might be useful to try. Line6 has a good one in their recent Pods and stuff. This is a multiband phaser, and it is set up so that they either sweep either up or down, and the effect is that they are continuously rising or falling, unlike a normal phaser which sweeps up and down.

Being a keyboard part, you might even be able to do some cool midi based stuff. You can set up delays either with midi plugins, or simply cut and past and transpose, edit etc.

Doing this, you could have each note of the arpeggio trigger delayed notes that are descending ... and unlike a simple pitch shifter, you could actually tune each note to be descending in thirds or something very musical ...

Then again, there are some intelligent pitch shifters that do a good job too ...

Or try automating a formant filter or a notch eq ...
