A friend of mine used to say "everything is big nothing"! So, wear your new cloths, blast the sh$t out of you gear, you should leave this world with absolutely nothing! As should all of us!

Even I'm young but had/have some heavy health problems last years, after my death all my audio gear will be giving free to general music school (conservatory) in Kenya Nairobi.

My dad works now after making his live really good for UNICEF projects in Kenya and Tanzania. I visit one's with him to see what he is doing over there in the time I just had my major surgery.
It overwhelmed me so much how lucky we are... so I told my dad that IF the day will come. Send out the stuff to the guys that need it.

After I die, my relatives are going to offer my gear as a complete package for $50,000 to a 23-year-old who they "really believe in".

Now THAT was funny!

Never did see a photo of all that cool old stuff. Damn troll. Next he'll find a mint 1959 Les Paul hiding under grandma's bed.

I'm only taking care of all my equipment until the next person gets to take care of it. I hope that's one of my children (especially the ridiculously talented youngest who is more interested)! Nothing will be mine forever.

I have some direct experience with this. My dear friend died very suddenly in 2007 and I volunteered the responsibility of selling his gear and distributing musical keepsakes to his friends and loved ones. The physical equipment wasn't too hard to deal with (it took close to a year all things considered), but the software proved a real pain in the ass. Trying to gather and sell licenses to software, plug-ins and digital assets is complex. I have a huge Excel document I made containing all the information, but the idea of trying to sell the licenses has so far proved too daunting and time consuming. The trade of software can be Byzantine as hell what with transfers of ownership and all the confirmation of identities, necessary upgrading etc. You feel pretty weird calling software companies in the hopes of getting them to help you out under the circumstances.

My only advice is to be organized and imagine for a minute that somebody will have to sort it out for you. Keep a list or database of all your software with serial numbers. If you own a lot of stuff it can be part of the legacy you leave, or at least enough worth to see your survivors through for a bit. Make it easy.

On top of that, stop eating bad food, get as much sleep as you can and exercise so you'll be around longer. Sorry to be a downer, but dying sucks.

Yes!!! this is what i´m talking about!!!!!, i love my gear as you all people do, you expend your life buying, fixing, using, breaking gear, so is so hard to let it go just like that.
The point is that we aint going to be around so, doesnt matter what we can think, all your gear is gonna be sold.
Just the recordings will remain.
You will never know when is your last day, i´m going to expend a couple of minutes in silence in the studio to be aware of it, cause you never know if this is the last time in it.
As an artist paints a picture, the picture remains, but not the brushes.
So sad...

For me, the gear matters relatively little. I do want to make sure I leave my kids a relatively complete and easy to navigate catalog of recordings in my iTunes library. Not quite there yet, but reasonably close.

Regarding gear, it's a matter of not leaving too much mess to clean up. I don't have much gear of great worth, and I'm gradually working on clearing out the stuff that doesn't see much action, either by selling, donating or trashing.

Most of the value here is in instruments, and I reckon the kids will have fun with those. Who knows? Some of them might not even get destroyed.

Cheers,

Otto

No one will ever get my precious gear. NO ONE.

I have a red button on my studio desk. If I don't press the red button every day by 9 AM the studio will blow up in a massive fireball.

Most people worry, when they're on vacation, "did I lock the front door?". I worry, "did I disable the red button?".

This is a pretty morbid topic, but I think most of mine would be left set up in tribute. I hope so anyway!

Let the debt die with me and the gear distributed to my musical friends in a dice game at my wake.

*snort*
----

-I've thought about getting a will for this reason. There are a few pieces (instruments mostly) that I'd like to be in certain hands in my eminent demise. I'd probably leave the rest to my brother and my girl to sell and split the money.
