UA 4-710 AD converted reviews

I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with using the digital converter on the UA 4-710 and does it sound better, worse or different than using the analog outputs? My application is to use the 4-710 as a front end of my music studio. My first goal is to find out if the DA is usable. If the onboard converters are not that good, I need to then decide to either keep it and get an interface/converter with at least 8 inputs or get rid of it and grab "all in one" solution that has great Mic Preamps.

4-710d (good converters) -> digital input on low end interface->DAW

4-710d (bad converters) ->Analog inputs on 8 channel mid/high end interface/converter ->DAW

Sell 4-710d and buy High end solution

The 4-710's converters have received decent reviews and it's hard for me to fathom UA using "bad" converters. The selling point - to me - of the 4-710d are it's four pres and compressors. I have it in the "next buy" position in my queue and am hoping my income tax refund can help accelerate the process.

There's a massive discussion about the 4-710D on here somewhere (I would dig it up, but I am posting via GS iPhone app). The reviews are mixed. It seems like the high-end audiophiles prefer other preamps at that cost, but that might be because they have better analog compressors at their disposal, so the limitations of the 710D doesn't appeal to them. It's dismissed as a "home studio" oriented equipment. However, most first-hand reviews have been favorable. I've been watching for more information to creep onto GS, because I'm also interested.

I would like to hear more too. It's almost a "make or break" feature to me. If the converter is good, it will ADD more preamps to whatever interface I'm using instead of using the preamps on the host.

I had two of these units..they both fried themselves...that was more of an issue than the converters.
