help with hooking up compressor into 1640i

i have a 3632 comp, that i wanna use for snare and kick compression for live perfomances. pictured here.

Into the back here. in the mackie manual it says to have a trs Y leaded into 2 ts cables with the sleeve being the being the common. i have the trs end into the insert of the channel and the 2 ts ends into the input/outputs of the comp. i can get signal into the compressor and it shows it compressing the signal in the level meters, but the sound is not being compressed. Am i doing this wrong or do i need to look into the gear being faulty?

Cheers!
