I am interested in buying a controller for using it for midi in pro tools. I am debating getting a controller with a good amount of keys or just getting a small one. Probably by next week I will have decided but I just want to get some opinions. So far this controller has caught my eye: Amazon.com: M-Audio Keystudio 49-key USB MIDI Controller Keyboard: Musical Instruments If anybody has any suggestions feel free. |

Do you play piano? Do you want the feel of weighted keys?

If you feel you need more controls later on you could always add an Akai ldp8 and/or a Korg NanoKontrol

| Lives for gear |
The M-Audio stuff has served me very well for several years. The keys are not weighted, but they are touch-sensitive.

m-Audio make some good solid gear for the price. It's never going to have all the bells and whistles, but it tends to perform pretty well. I've got an Axiom 61 that does everything I need (and more). In terms of how many keys? That depends on your recording/playing style. Some people prefer to gradually layer up their tracks, while others like to do it all in one shot. I'd rather have more keys than fewer, as that just gives me more options in terms of experimentation. Of course it also depends how much space you've got ![]() 49 keys is a good choice, as it allows for decent two handed playing. I prefer to have 61 keys, as I like to wander around finding new melodies/combinations. My personal advice is to buy the biggest keyboard you can afford. You don't have to use the extra keys, but it's better to have them than not.
