What is unique about your studio?

I've been asked quite a few times by friends to show what makes Silvertone a bit different than other mastering/recording facilities... so I did a little video highlighting some of the "unique" things I do in my workshop...

It's a bit silly but you get the idea, hope you enjoy...

So show everybody what is unique about your place...

I was gonna say ME! I was!

I'll give you all a little insight into how Youtube works, if you're interested... during the data uploading, having typed the words "Silvertone Pirated Video" and the tag "yt:stretch=16:9, it suggested further tags of Stretch the rapper, Video and Video Art.

Once it started processing the images, it suddenly added Mobile device, How to and Cars.

First def'n of unique is singular. That would be my homemade drum kit, and I suppose, my M-23 2-track, since it is in a console I made. Under the def'n meaning unusual I would probably include my minimalist recording aesthetic, tracking with omni and figure-8 mikes in the QSF, tracking and mixing to tape.

Cheers,

Otto

Just a tad of whats unique at Barnwood Studios (here in Canfield County)

.
  • mixing console is the size of 1176 (but deeper)
  • monitors are at standing height, no chair, no sitting.
  • no patch bay ...must go around back, do it manually.
  • no digital anything (except for tape-counters and transports).
.

I love it... thanks for the kind words everyone.

Joel you are too much.

Dualflip, hope you are enjoying those Warner Brother Q8 modules... they were my best Q8 modules ever.

Love the video Lenny!

Talent is a great answer... I guess I should have asked what equipment and techniques (that you use on this talent) makes your studio unique.

I guess for me it's that I never followed the norm and always trusted my own ears. So I bought equipment that I thought sounded good to me. That and having to discover recording techniques on my own... there was very little information in the early days and you had to figure things out on your own many times, especially if you had a client coming in. The web seems to make everybody a little "same" in their sound.

As for the "Me, everything else you can get elsewhere" statement... I only wish that were true, half my studio is unobtainium and has taken me 20 years to amass this gear (and sound). And as long to discover many of the techniques I use to this day.

I find great gear make your job substantially easier and great talent makes it sound that much better. Great talent also makes you look like you're a genius recording engineer... it's why I always try to work with the best talent I can (ha-ha).

Keep it coming gang...

My studio is private but the neighbors are somewhat unique (I've played these cards a number of times already ) but perhaps some have not seen them

Larry: Those are part of what make my studio unique. Your electrodyne console is one of a kind, dont ever sell that man!

I hope you are doing well, and keep the studio videos coming

The feel of my live room is one of my studio's unique features. I do a lot of acoustic music and the room's woody nature seems to complement both the music and the vibe of the sessions/musicians.

Once we finally get our Quad 8 console up and running that Jack Clement gave to us (it was originally installed at Jack's Tracks) people will really love it...but the studio has been too busy for me to devote a week or two to it.

Glad to see I`m not the only one who places amps in the bathroom.

Mine is a private studio for me, friends, and friends of friends but what makes it special imo, is that no negative or condescending attitudes are tolerated.
If your not helping, you can stay but you won't be back.
I acknowledge that you don't have that luxury though, when your running a public studio.
Im lucky to be living my dream.
Sorry bout the pic sizes,im not good with video.
Added last year after these pics:
RME UFX
Digital drums
HS-80's
Tom mics
New pedal board

Nice vibe, yes indeed there are some advantages to private. Although its a bit harder to get and stay inspired when one is solo, me thinks.

The most unique thing about every studio is the person in it. No gear, furniture or lighting etc will come close to the endlessly creative and random ideas that somehow land in each of our brains. We are all unique and draw on different life experiences for our creations whether it be a song idea, guitar riff, vocal melody or mixing style.
Some have more gear than others, but the ones that will put out the most amazing material are the ones with the most talented and creative minds at the helm.

I'll shut up now.

Something along the lines of, "If you're can't say something nice... I'll cut you"?
