Prevention from hearing damage from dentist scale & clean, Hairdresser hairdryer, etc

I went to the hair dresser and their blow dryer and color dryer gave me a massive ear ache especially since it is so close to my ears that you can fell the wind going into your ear.

So I have decided to wear ear plugs when I see my hairdresser.

Now I decided to got the dentist for a scale and clean and their little water wave drill for cleaning plaque produced such a high pitched noise inside my mouth that my hearing felt numb afterwards.

I don't know how to protect my hearing on this one. I was considering ear plugs on this but I think I am hearing the pitch from inside my mouth.

Anyone have any advise on protecting your hearing in this situation.

Wearing the earplugs for the blow dryer is a good call.

The dentist drill thing shouldn't be a long term problem. It's not something that you'd want to endure for more than a few minutes duration obviously. But with the relative infrequence of dental visits that most folks have I doubt it's a significant hearing threat. Noise induced hearing damage is cumulative. It doesn't typically happen all at once or from a few, isolated, risky exposures. If you're going to the dentist say twice a year (which is what they tend to recommend around here) then I wouldn't worry about it.

you are to an extent, but I think it is quite attenuated compared to what comes in your ears

snap your fingers in front of your face, now open your mouth and snap again

if you listen very carefully, you might be able to hear it get a tiny bit louder, but most of the sound you are hearing is still coming in via your ears.

Everyone goes the dentist at some point, so we would all be deaf if this was an issue.

low profile, mild to moderate attenuation ear plugs, so you can still talk but save your ears, and not have to make an awkward deal about it
