Thread Starter | I'm not even sure what sounds the most like the amp cause I didn't stick my ear down there but...I still stand by the 409 for its smooth mid gronk. that said, I take the 906 out for live gigs and leave the 409 safe and sound in the studio. i sold the 609 or else I would do a really decent series of recording tests with my bogners instead of a $200 practice amp and play something worth listening to! |

comparing a 57 or i5 to a 609/906 is analogous to comparing it to an MD421/421II that is a much beefier mic for that matter and a captures a better guitar midrange and drum tom midrange for that matter, but a pain in the butt to put on a kit in front of crazy rock drummers and might be better for suited for tamed jazz drummers lol you would be better suited to comparing the 421 series to the 609/906 series btw i listened to the samples above and never liked the 409 series that much. always too flat and drab for my ears for high gain amps. Much better suited for bassman/vibrolux/twin/deluxe/pro rever/super reverb type amps and genres? I think - Rent a royer 121 and try it on a 4x12 distant sometome and put a 421 or 906 up close. You'll be pleased. Don't write off the KSM 27, 32s and 44. These fvvkers are great on so many sources incl vocals that its a crime. If you don't have these in the closet yet, well ... run down to the sore and buy some. Your preamp will make all the diff here. Clean HV3D Millenia rocks with those, as well as Vipres I'm dying to get my dickbeaters on one of the new Mercenary El Diablo high SPL ribbons esp on the EVH Fender 5150IIIs I recently acquired. I forsee adding two of these to the mic closet soon. BTW, I love those 5150IIIs. Holy crap eddie, you outdid yourself bro. This is the neatest, sweetest motherfvvkerer I have played in over 30 years. I want a dozen more. Good God Almighty! I wanna have your babies Ed (just kidding) LOL If you buy nothing else these are must have mics and you can rock the world: Dynamics: RE20 SM81 906 i5s Sm57s 421s Beta 52A Beta 56A 98/Ds for toms Condenser: C451B AT4050, AT4047, AT4060, MA200s KSM 141s 27s 32s and 44s and KSM 141s When you have the bucks: MKH 800s 2-4, Royers 121 pr, SF12 pr and forget about everything else. If you can't do it with these, then all the 67, 47, 87, 251, C12, Brauner, Manley Reference, Sony 800 etc boutique crap (but nice to have) will not cut it either ![]() my 2c ~skygod~

| I have a 609, sounds good on guitar if used in conjunction with another mic, like an RE20 or KEL HM1. I saw the Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon' dvd a while back, and in most of the live shots, and some studio shots, it appeared they were using the 409 on vocals. Was it a common live vocal mic in England in the 70's?

| I have a senn md 509 that absolutely rules on my marshall. much, much better than a 57. i suspect that it is very similar to the 409... and this is what i have heard. does anyone know anything about this fairly rare microphone? based on those clips, i wouldn't touch a 609, but the 906 flat comes a little closer.... god, the silver is AWEFUL. but, that said, i wouldn't mind hearing the rig tracked with a 57 too, for comparison. |

| Guys can you tell me for recording purely Marshall heavy rock tones would I be better of with a 57 centered on the cone and a MD421 of axis or 57 and another 57, or 57 and 906??? 57 centered on cone has that bright agression but want something else to fill in low end bigger tone? Also any help on mic placement appreciated? Does the 421 sound like any of these? I preferred tehe 906 boosted and the 409 |

| The 609's are decent and I've A/B'd all the reissues with my original MD409's and they all miss the original classic magic. Even a tech at Sennheiser recently agreed with me. I have 3 that are really good. A 4th needs new iso foam but sounds great. The 409's like it loud |

| I also think my black 609 has nothing to do with the sample shown. Here is a very rough live recording of my band, roughly mixed on a room that misteriously sucks all bass so it's kind of muddy, but you can hear a 609 in action... http://algaravia.murilix.org/mp3/MIS/5.mp3 The guitar was recorded through a black 609. MIM Strat w/ Gold Lace Sensors>lots of pedals>Fender DeVille 410>E609>Mackie Onyx FW>Sonar Also, what's that clicking on the E609 black sample? Is that the picking? No offense intended, but maybe you got mics that were mounted the wrong way round? Frankly, by the sample it sounds like the mic is back to the speaker. I also wouldn't use a flat eq on the amp as the "benchmark". Who records guitars with a flat eq'd amp?

| Thanks for those clips man! I just found this thread 2 years later haha. The 409 is my favorite and then the 906 flat... think I'll have to get one of those. Check out Pink Floyd "Live at Pompeii" for some good shots of the 409 in action! |

| Lives for gear | WOW, never knew. i always knew i liked the e609's but now that i hear it compared ot other things,..i understand why a bit more. i really like the sound of teh 409 though, i could use one of those for some very nice raw recordings ![]() it's nice ot have a rolloff and boost an flat option however.

| 409 all the way!! sounds kind of pagey/troutmaskey the 906 is nice too with more of a modern, even kind of sound... reminds me of my 421, though I've never owned or tried a 906 myself |

| I have a 609 black.. I rarely use it but when I do it's in conjunction with a brighter mic. I like the 409 the most. The 906 comes in 2nd.

| I wondered for years what Gilmore and Wright were singing into. The 409's were fabulous on their voices. That's the film that made me a musician. Saw it in 1978. |

| I like the 409 the best. I also really like the 906 flat, I think it's upper midrange/treble grittiness works and it still stays smooth otherwise. The others...not such a fan. I own an e906, and love the results I get with it. I'd love to try a 409. All in all, I'm really glad I didn't get a 609 now. That said, I have serious doubts about the mic positioning being the same on all clips. The differences seemed too pronounced to me. |

| Usual "old thread" apologies... Haven't seen this but I would guess it would be a Reslo ribbon mic. Confirm or deny? |

| I used to own a 409 that I took apart to inspect the foam and when I put it back together I accidentally flipped the capsule so that the back was facing "front". I figured this out when I recorded a guitar and it sounded "wooly". Could this be the case with your black 609? I now own two black 609s (one of them NOS) and a 509 and they sound much more similar to each other than your black 609 does to your 409. |
