AKG 271 Studio - strange issue...

I used to work with a pair of these for about 3 years and thought they were excellent (more than excellent actually).

Then I bought another pair a few days ago, and I really feel that the new pair doesn't sound as good. Actually, it sound so different that it's hard to beleive it's the same pair !

To be more specific ther highs are much harsher, there's way more bass to them and way less midrange, and generally the sound is not as open as the older set,
but is more defined (feels a bit like studio monitors).

Did they made any change to the design of this model lately ?
is just becuase the new pair has to be given some play hours before it "opens up", or just that each pair can sound a buit different ?

I'm starting to hate this pair, they are SO harsh in the high-end.

What's going on ??

Well, most speakers benefit from some break in time of course. But that behavior doesn't sound like my 271s, they are very excellent and have an even response. Bought a little over a year ago, and sounded good from the start. My favorites for listening comparisons. Can you exchange?

Yes I can exchange with another pair they have in the store, but somehow I'm almost sure they will sound the same (they are probably from the same batch anyway). I'm really curious if AKG made any change to their design. You can definately hear more bass and I know that one of the things people complained about with this model is that it lacks some low end.

When the 270 was discontinued, I bought two 271 pairs. They are not the equal in any way of the 270 wrt isolation (inside to out, and outside to in) and tonality. I don't care for the 271 model really; mine are 4 months old.
