I personally like the mic. A lot of people say it sounds papery, but sometimes that sound is what you need to get through the mix. I generally still go for the D112 though. I just bought a Yamaha SubKick and it's changed my life. I love that mic.

The D6 sounds cool on toms too.

I found the d6 to be a good mic for heavy rock music kit. Easy to place, quite scooped ... Almost no need for EQ.
You could also easyly compliment it with a mic to take the beater (don't know if it's the correct word) such as a Beyer M88, a MD421, but a casual SM57 will do the trick.

I also like the shure B52 ... It's a little harder to place it correctly, but once youre in, it's nice. I like the click tone of this one better than the one from the audix, but you still want to EQ much more your B52 to make it suit in the mix. (take out some of these 250, boost a bit round 60/90 ... ).

But the Audix is also very usefull on gigs ! Soooo easy to deal with ...

You can't go wrong whith both anyway.

I have tried everything including Neumann U47 fets on rock, metal & punk kicks, and in the under 1000 range the Audix D6 simply shines and it super easy to use.

Next favorites are Beyer M88 and E/V RE-20.

If you need sub, add the Yamaha Subkick or a subharmonic synthesizer to the main kick signal.

If you are still not getting what you want, then I suggest the Shure Beta52 and a Beta 91 for thump & snap respectively.

Hope this helps!

If you want a modern metal sound with fat lows scooped mids and a lot of click, there's no better mic than this.

yes its a very nice mic for metal kick.
It has more low (boominess) than the d 112, but
can't go wrong with either if you know what your doing.
angle the mic to the beater around half way in the kick.
I like to put it a bit to one side to get more low.
You also need to boost 80-100 htz, cut 280-380 htz, boost 3k and 10 k.
A DBX 160 VU is also a major component in the metal kick chain.

I've been able to use it alone positioned just right.

Slightly out, poiting slighty away from the the beater...

through a Great River MP2-NV/EQ2-NV/Distressor it's f***ing deadly!

Thumbs up D-6 is the s**t!!!

The Audix D-6 is a bomb-ass mic! In combo with the Yamaha Subkick, then to a couple of Focusrite ISA110's, theres nothing better!

the d6 is the best kick mic for metal out there right now. all the other mics are kinda older. its really the newest good kick mic out and therefore it is a bit more contemporary in it sound for heavy music. this mic is the kick drum mic of choice for some of the top metal engineers/producer out there right now.

to me its good for punk and metal...but
I use a 421 and sub kick or the boxy old d112 and take the crap I dont want out...I find it hard to add stuff into a d6 once its been tracked...easier to do with the other mics by taking stuff out.......watch out...all the punk emo kids want the natural booming kik again........mr bonham...are you awake
