Tracking a Rhodes, which compressor/eq?

As a companion to this thread, do you guys use compressor/eqs on rhodes signal chain for capturing all the colors the Rhodes has to offer?

[i've been recording direct into a high end pre and was wondering if you guys use distressor or fatso or mc77 and especially a little eq when tracking]

I track it clean and straight - console mic pre, no compresssion, no eq. It sounds like a rhodes - just like I wanted it to sound.

i usually put a dynacomp between the rhodes and the DI of either my great river or api.
maybe it's just my rhodes ( 1969 mark 1) but i always have to dip a lot in the 200-400 range and boost a little 5k to get it to sit with a thick track. also, a rat thru an amp, makes the rhodes a beautiful beast.

the best compressor for a rhodes, imo, is 456.

Rhoads

I run it through a Countryman Type 85 Direct Box into a Seimans V-72 Tube Pre.
No Compression, But I hit 2" Quantegy GP-9 at +11db - Then if I need Compression
on Mixdown - I would Use a DBX 160VU or a Distressor set at 3:1 will always work.

I treat it like a guitar also. Sometimes using compressor pedal and also Phase.

If no pedals then sometimes a compressor after the pre if the playing needs to be evened out a little. We mic a suitcase so that seems to do a little compression of its own. If you are just recording DI, then a little compression to taste should be good.

I never record the Rhodes direct. Always mic'd off an assortment of amps. As for pres, my Rhodes seems to love my 1272. I was using an RCA BA25A for compression, but i'm currently in the process of selling that. I use my console EQ (Soundtracs Quartz).

For compression I use the rectifier tube in a Fender amp.

Direct through a pre works nice too.
