Ideas for Nasty Drums?

Hey all,

Seems like its been ages since Iv ventured into these parts! But alas, the hunt for more aesthetically pleasing audio goes on...

Anyway, I recently had a listen to some old loops from my library, and came across a Zero G library called 'Planet of the Breaks'. After having a mess around with the samples for a while I decided Id like to reproduce some of these super saturated drum sounds in my own recordings.

Had some alright preliminary results using PSP Vint Warmer, but Im thinking some old vibey gear will get the job done far nicer.

Not sure what to try though, any suggestions?

I had a mess with some guitar pedals, but didnt get close. Im thinking some nasty old preamps or compressors might be on the cards, what do you reckon?

Cheers, lads! And hope everyone is well

TB

PS. The link is limited to a week I believe and contains 4 samples from the library mentioned. If this is in violation of any rules, just let me know and I'll remove it pronto.

Recently I ran some drum loops through my Chandler TG-2 with the input gain cranked--it gets them nasty and crunchy, but in a lovely way (if that makes sense).

Also try the free SSL Talkback compressor plug that's available for free on their website (VST for OSX or XP I believe).

GT2?

Yep, my first love in drum / guitar pedals. I do like this one alot, but I also find it a little bit narrow band if that makes sense (probably as its designed for guitars).

I think I could really do with some nice fat pre's, but Im scared of breaking them!

Excellent, appreciate the advice.

You wouldnt happen to have any of those TG2 recordings handy would you? If so, then Id love to hear one. Been considering this box for a while, as I hear it does wonders on big rock guitars. If it can double up as a sat processor then my mind may well be made up.

PS. Infact, no please dont, I cant afford it, lol!

Hi!

One suggestion would be to run your drums thrugh a Korg ms20 and just fiddle away with the knobs!

•Shure Level Loc (impedance matched or not)
•Distressor
•Reamp to guitar amp, or pedal, or both, or into a pre overdriven with an atty on the output to adjust levels
•"Burnt Transistor" in a Kurzweil
*Waves TransX, SPL Trans Designer, Sony Trans Mod
•Lo Fi

Depends on what works best in the track, raw umber, Indian red, Prussian Blue, eggplant, or just plain green.

Also, time expansion and compression a bunch of times back and forth can yield some trippy artifactual nastiness.
