NAMM was particularly underwhelming this year, in fact just as you posted "Common". The person I went with did comment "There are a lot of Ukulele Companies. Does the world really need that many ukeleles?"

New all in one monitoring box from Radial. $249 list. Pretty much an M-Patch 2 in a smaller box.

Speaking of things that seem to be way overdone this year - did any of these Ukuleles have iPad/iPhone integration?

MAN! what a great show!

- Caught the last couple questions during the Joe Chicarelli UA interview, freakin awesome. "I never use Solo while mixing. theres no point. the consumer can't solo out each track, so why am I going to spend all this time making it sound good by itself if it still sounds like shit in the mix?" AWESOME.

- grabbed some awesome shwag from Manley

- Chatted it up for a nice long while with Joe from Manley and Dave Pearlman. Seriously, so much fun listening to Dave talk about microphones

- Tons and Tons of great boutique guitar pedals

- Ate In-N-out instead of shitty convention center food. AW yeah.

Mostly NAMM this year was about catching up and getting to know new people in the industry. Lots of new things here and there, and as usual I spent maybe 15 minutes in hall D.

I'll try an post some pics later.

See you all again tomorrow!

Friday night was anyone else at the TEC show?

Pretty cool. Will Lee the MC - Skunk Baxter leading a 15piece band with 4 horns.

And of course the awards - AVID pretty much one everything they were nominated for. Same with Shure. Oh and Steve Vai won the Gibson award.

Good times....

More were not there than were there. This seems to be a trade show pattern that started with the demise of AES.

Many companies are figuring out that they can do much on the web without needing old world trade shows and their excessive expense.

This has kept me from renting a booth for over 10 years, it's not worth it anymore. Not seeing several companies I expected has made me re-think the value of attending these shows.

It's important for some to be first to see and touch the new products that are unveiled at these shows.

Saw the other stuff at the Radial booth, but missed the PowerStrip. Did you hear/see retail pricing on it? If it's around the price of the A-Designs HR500 ($299) it's a no brainer.

IMHO coolest booths I visited in Hall A;

AEA microphones w/ Julian et al (Wes was away for a little while)
Dave Pearlman (& the booths directly adjacent)
Studio Projects w/Alan/his sons/& Brent
Royer/Mojave w/Dave
Little Labs (John)

A couple of booths (to remain nameless) weren't too helpful.

But most were pretty nice to stop by at...

Umm... In-N-Out *was* the shitty convention centre food. At least there was a Baja Fresh in the hotel.

Yeah, it and the three-banger lunchbox were somewhere around $350 MSRP, so probably $299 street price.

The inductor EQ and tube pre 500 modules are a nice addition.

I need the monitor controller, but will have to swap out the pot with a stepped attenuator. I have no idea why this isn't mandatory on all monitor controllers.

Sadly wasn't a whole lot new there this year. I was kind of disappointed.

to be fair, there are some companies so big they dont need a convention. Gibson, Fender, Marshall, etc. etc. could all do just as well if all they did was drop a couple videos on their websites showing whatever new product they have off. I feel that making an appearance at NAMM helps add to the buzz of a product though. You get the guys who go to and try them out, then come home and are ranting and raving to all the people that haven't gotten to try it out. Of course its great for less known companies as well, to get their name and products out there.

The last year I went was when the Andromeda was released. I'm sure this year will be very "un-spectacular". As the music industry shrinks, so does NAMM.

Actually, the big trade shows are where many of the retailers negotiate and write their orders for the year with their anchor companies like Gibson, Fender, Roland, etc. They need to be there; the big order events like the NAMMs are how they know what their manufacturing levels will need to be at. The back rooms are full of the sales people dealing with the shop owners.

The guys who are trying the product out and going home and ranting and raving to their friends are the sort who really aren't supposed to be at NAMM. (I'm one of those people.)
