Interface Causing Monitors and Headphones to Sound Bad

Finally got some monitors for my studio, but every once and awhile the sound distorts and everything sounds like a filthy saw synth. I don't think the monitors are causing the issue because I hear the noise in my headphones as well.

I have KRK 5's (I know there are better monitors but I got a great deal!) that are plugged into a presonus audiobox usb (24 bit)

My friend suggested that I change the bit settings to 16 on my interface, because he had a similar issue with the same monitors and an m-audio interface, and that seemed to solve the issue. However, he has a mac and I have a pc, and I don't know how to try that or if that is even the issue.

Help please!!

Reinstall the latest drivers for your interface, and make sure your DAW has the latest updates. Stay at 24 bit 44.1 or 48.

Identify exctly what you are doing when it farts out. What is your CPU, Ram and disk useage when it does this?
