How do they compare and contrast? Well, for one thing, Insane Clown Posse would never play with a Magnatone. How do they f*cking work?

But more seriously, unless I'm mistaken, Buddy Holly and Duane Eddy played with Magnatone amps. If that's your kind of sound (and it sure is mine) and you have the occasion to get one, then do it. For one thing, you'll get an amp with a sound that's a lot less common than a Fender. Technically, Frank's reply above offers a lot more than a mere opinion on these amps though.

does anyone know if the "50 watts" that the magna tone 280 has is actually louder than the "40 watts" of the fender 57 twin?

Watts are a weird thing, some amps say low watts and they end up being louder than the amps that say they are a lot of watts!

They tend to get used in very different ways. The Magnatone has a clean tone to die for. It's not crushingly loud, but it is warm and with the stereo vibrato it kills. 280s are somewhat collectable, expect to pay between $1200-1500 for a fairly good one. I don't really know a lot of guys who overdrive them.

The Twin is more of a rock machine, sounds great overdriven, takes pedals well, crushingly loud when you get to the point it's crunching. A good twin is going to set you back $2000 (for the wide panel in rougher shape) to $5000 for a cherry narrow panel.

If you want the Magnatone there's only one way to get it, but most folks find the Fender more flexible for modern music.
