Thread Starter | Guitar USB interface vs. DI & Pre-amp
I've been recording direct guitars into my DAW and then using amp software for a while now. I'm happy with the results, but I'm just wondering if I would get better quality by using some dedicated Guitar USB hardware, like Rig Kontrol 3, for example. I am a little ignorant concerning low-z/hi-z impedance stuff. Normally I plug into a DI, and then go into my 1073's. I come out of the 1073's into 1/4 ins on my Motu 2408. Is this technically correct? Would I experience an improvement in quality by recording through Rig Kontrol 3 instead? It's either this, or a new keyboard, but I don't want to get the guitar hardware if I don't experience a tonal improvement.

I can't answer you, sorry... I have never used a Rig Kontrol neither a Neve pre.. Anyway, I'm answering to say that if you really want to improve the guitar tone, go with the real thing... VALVE AMPS!! I tried to use sims but they suck man, thats the truth = / |

I think you will find a lot of people on each side of that argument, and I'm sure there are plenty of other threads available to discuss it.

You're not going to get a better sound than going through your 1073s. The USB sound will be the guitar by itself, which may sound good. I would imagine practically anything through a 1073 sounds better than by itself.

Thanks. The 1073's definitely sound good... and I don't really feel like my tones leave much to be desired. I have heard that the Rig Kontrol 3 has pretty good conversion, so that might beat out my MOTU 2408 conversion, but maybe not. I guess it's not worth $270 to find out.
