Build my 12k -15k home recording studio

Joined just for your advice. I want to hear professional input on a home recording studio with a 12k -15k budget. THIS IS NOT A TROLL, DAYDREAMER OR A SALES REP! Im seeking bang for buck with the ability to stay in the professional category. Also I want timeless equipment to build on not trendy niche gear that can't hold its value.

Im Reinvesting, I Record/produce all types of music

* I want to center around a controller or console preferably a Analog/Digital console.
* I prefer a ITB & OTB setup
* I grew up on hardware so I favor that.
* Tracking/Post ITB
* Condenser mics, Inst. mics etc.
* Software, plugins, etc.
* it doesn't have to be expensive boutique gear. Just workhorse bang for buck equipment that keeps prof. Clients satisfied.
* I don't mind a pro tools setup but i am not into the pro tools hype. Skill, experience and education get professional results not the brand of equipment.

I don't want to argue about what's the "best". I am looking for professional advice on what gets the job done. I have 13+ years of experience but we all can learn from one another. there's so many different variations I wanted to hear what others recommend before I hit "add to cart"

Thanks!

Lynx Aurora 16
Pro Tools
Mac Pro
Toft, Tascam, Soundcraft or whatever recording console you can find within your budget.
SM57's
Seventh Circle Preamps
pair of distresses
akg 414's

Used you could pull that off on your budget

Oh, and dont forget the OC 703 bass traps

what gets the job done is anything you know how to use well
and have access to

you can rent anything you need
with a good room harder to find than gear to fill it

$2000 buys gear that blows away any studio of years past.

if you are recording, you need to fix the home studio room soundwise and that will be more than your budget

if you are just editing/mixing/mastering then any good pc set up will do you. 2k buys all you need and the basic plugs
save the rest of your money.

Pretty much what he said...just dont forget the little annoying things that seem to add up quick like mic stands, DI's, mic cables, instrument cables...so on and so on.

Thanks, Good Call...

Great suggestion friend, I have more financial range than posted but have a separate media budget Im trying to preserve.

Lynx Aurora 16 - Smart

Pro Tools - HUI issues with Tascam DM 4800 have halted the PT10 purchase.

Mac Pro - Built a Super computer (PC) for Cinema, Recording and Photography. I will buy a IMac (or maybe a midrange Mac Pro) to produce in a standalone config since my workflow will often be one or the other. Dont want to power up unecessary equipment.

Toft, Tascam, Soundcraft - Really like the Toft Console! I initially planned to purchase the Tascam DM 4800 x2 or Allen Heath GS R24M for its Analog/Digital integration. Which Soundcraft Console were you suggesting?

SM57's- Own, SM58's as well. those are studio mainstays ... somehow you just keep getting more.

Seventh Circle Preamps- Those will help the Tascam Bigtime
pair of distresses - okay

akg 414's - Great choice, I chose neumann?

Like most I like to over analyze before I commit... We salivate more during the hunt than during the kill...

You want drums guitars and amps included in that budget? Considered tackling this until I saw they were listed.

Thanks Draytone, your right! I made that accessories list first. Its so easy to overlook those. Theres nothing worse then budgeting new gear, forgetting a cord and having to go to guitar center to play that game... Found an Ominirax 24 Desk on GS, hopefully the guy still has it for sale.

I understand PWN,

I have more financial room to play than I listed, I am just cheap. Plus I have a separate Media Budget im trying to leave in tact.

For example, instead of getting Gon Bops set I am getting an LP Classics II set and changing heads. The guitars and drums arent for my clients they're for me in music production. Most of my clients have a girlfriend (instrument) they cant live without and would bring her to record. I dont need premium instruments just quality work horse gear. if all else failed I have instuments and can incorporate more pieces in the next phase of growth. Common Sense, instruments removed...

Last edited by jermainegil; 5th January 2012 at 07:57 AM.. Reason: Removed instruments as PWN suggested

The akg 414 is the sm57 of condenser world. They do everything great. I love Neumanns, but they are colored and work better on specific sources.

I would get an ampeg b15 or svt or pf500 with the matching 2x10 for bass. and a re20 to mic it for a bass rig.

Yamaha stage custom with zildjian a customs and Ludwig lm402 and lm400. A vintage Ludwig or slingerland set would be beautiful if you can find a good one for the right price.

So much in the guitar world, I love orange rockerverbs, but most players would be happy with a deluxe reverb and jcm800

That might kill your budget haha

i love me some vintage sligerlands (my avatar is a tat with my serial number). that said i would be happy to show up to a studio with a customs (my choice or vintage a's) etc.

instruments aside, 414's are your friend, just said similair in another thread but they are swiss army mics

Well, if you can find the I/O necessary to convert the ADAT to something usable with a computer, then that would work pretty well

You can do anything with SM57's and get great results.
