whats your favorite acu gtr mic/pre combo

I have used lots of combos and realized it defiantly revolves around the actual gtr and player but i would like to know how YOU get TONE and not just pick on stings or mud

Hard to go wrong with a KM54 into a V76.

Most of the time 103 and a 512, works 99 percent of the time. Depends on guitar and player to.

First of all, for me it's one mic. I can't remember the last time I put 2 mics on an acoustic guitar. I would definitely reconsider this for a solo guitar recording.

Then it's placement. Mud is almost always a feature of pointing the mic right at the sound hole. 14th fret is pretty common for success. A quality guitar smaller than a dreadnought also helps a lot against mud.

It helps to have a vision of how the guitar will fit in the mix. This will help inform guitar selection and pick selection. These are both pretty crucial. It also informs microphone choice.

Once the guitar, pick, and part sound right for what I'm trying to accomplish, then it usually comes down to a relatively flat condenser or the RE-20. If the condenser is too bright then the RE-20 comes out. I bet I'm on the RE-20 75% of the time. Delicate playing will often bring out a condenser.

With factors like player, guitar, pick, microphone, and placement, the preamp is a relatively minor choice. I've only got a couple of choices, and my API 312s are the best I've got so it's almost always one of those, but if it's the RE-20 it will definitely be the RE-20, whereas I'd consider something else for a condenser that requires less gain.

U67 into a V72 never sounds bad.

just strumming.. its one of those hit or miss things that drive me crazy .. i heard a sample of a KEL hm-7u mic that sounded very appealing on acoustic ..solid smooth mids.. lots of tone .. i dont have that but i found a sample of voice

For a loud player a pair of U87 with Innertube mods into a Focusrite ISA215. For quieter players a pair of Schoeps cmc64 into an API 3124 or Forssell pres.

Lots of choices depending on guitar, player, style, and song.

I've been enjoying a CMV563 (modified, including new AMI iron) or a u87 into a Roll Tubule for a solo blues (Gibson guitar) sounds.

For strumming stuff I'd probably move toward a km84 and a API 512c.

I am often recording finger picking style - classical. Usually I am using two KSM 44 in Blumlein stereopair, into ART MPA II.

Lately:

Acoustic strummed: RE 20 -------------------- Pacifica
Fingerpicked: KM 184 or AT Pro37r------ Pacifica or 3124+

Depends on the acoustic of course, the above works for mine (Taylor 614ce) and a Washburn that was recently here, next week, who knows
