Too much dust on capsule

What's your opinion on the condition of this old U87 capsule? Is this too much dust? Is it easy to clean off? I don't know about reconditioning mics....

Happy New Year

Unless of course you need your mic back in less than three years.

Doesn't seem very dusty to me. I wouldn't perform any sort of cleaning yet.

From the photos you posted the capsule doesn't look that bad [but unless you see something glaring - its pretty tough to make a capsule determination from a photograph]... if I were you [and be really glad I'm not!!] I would put the capsule back into the head basket, the head basket on the mic... make sure you're getting signal to some head phones and then breathe on the head of the mic like you're trying to fog a mirror.

If the capsule shuts down for a second when you do that then your capsule is either due for a cleaning or you might want to have it checked out by an actual capsule specialist. If the capsule doesn't shut down when you do the "fogging" thing... then all is good and you can go on your merry way with a happy capsule that is most likely in good health.

Peace

Compressed air (held back a bit - don't kill it) for the loose dust, really soft artists' brush for the rest if you really need to.

Little paint brushes are the best way to get dust out of the nooks and crannies of gear.

+1 on the paint brush. Compressed air sometimes spits out the propellant and is a tough to regulate. I always keep a 1" wide paint brush near my outboard gear and console for dusting too... works really great.

I've used a bulb brush designed for film negs & lens glass. It's got a really soft brush on one end and a bulb you can squeeze to shoot a gentle puff of air through the brush. B&H sells a Kaiser that looks OK.
