I was gonna say Comprehensive, Easily Accesible, and Intuitive Lighting.
One of my pet peeves is a control room where it's either too dark to read, or where the track lighting is causing too bright a reflection off equipment legends. And I really hate lighting controls that aren't super obvious! Don't make me go hunting for a hidden access panel built into a diffusor to find the main dimmers, and don't give me some Crestron/AMX touchpanel where I have to dig two pages down in the UI to find the lighting control.

I'm not a recording engineer, but a musician. I mostly look at the engineer's attitude and talent through past recordings. I'm not a stickler for equipment, although I expect it to be much better than what I keep at home. Also, the "vibe" the studio and room emanate is incredibly important to me. I see so many people open budget studios with consumer equipment in dinky, awful looking buildings. If it doesn't seem like a creative environment, I'm not going to bother recording there. Also, PROPERLY DONE SOUND TREATMENT. These same budget studios often have minimal treatment, and often done with improperly placed Auralex foam instead of even basic trapping. I'm certainly not an expert on sound treatment, but I understand more about the subject through online articles and a couple of books than I see applied in so-called "professional" studios. There's really no excuse for that lack of knowledge. Compared to the cost of equipment, some simple treatment isn't even expensive.

Haha... I was in a studio that had a wall with about 30 switches and 10 rotary knobs...all I wanted was to turn down the lights in an iso booth. I never could find the right one.

Aside from all the obvious stuff - enough room for the entire band to sit comfortably in the control room. I always seemed to end up with the rickety swivel chair!

Yeah...I was posing the question in such a way that if you were in a studio that wasnt your own what would you like to see. If you wanted to see a client at that point all you would have to do is find a mirror.

Ahhh... I suppose I'd still want to see clients... and high level ones at that. But, if we're talking inanimate objects... I guess a properly tuned control room would be a great place to start followed by a great sounding live room. Then some well maintained quality gear and ample parking!

As freelancer: A good acoustic in all recording rooms and control room, working equipment and an studio owner or assistant that knows how the studio works. I prefer also good musicians who can do an '1taker' over a bunch of idiots that tries all day but don't get it right...

But in all seriousness, there is nothing better than a neve or ssl sitting in front of you! Period!
I knew there would be no way of getting out of having a nice SSL
What I have going for my place
SSL 9056J
Nice outboard (getting a ton more in 2012)
Safe neighborhood (20 min to downtown)
Ground level in/out no stairs or elev.
Decent food closeby
There's actually a really nice 4 star Hilton 10 mins away
Clean bathroom
Wood everywhere(1974)
2 sets of mains and 2 sets of nearfields
Ambient lighting (just added)
All gear just recently serviced
NO train (not anywhere near enough that it would be a problem)

We all have access to great engineers, just because of this forum, and I'd like to think some of us know what we are doing, so there should not be any excuses....
EMT 140
Profools HD AND Tape
Wifi
Cable
Good ventilation system
New headphone system
I think I've covered all the basics of what any normal recording mix session would need....
And dare I say A stripper pole in the live room... Ha!

First of all I'd like to be treated friendly. Helpful, supportive and I'd like to get the impression that the engineers/producers actually put some elbow grease into helping achieve my goals. I expect talent without arrogance.

And I'd rather have only a small choice of high end outboard gear but a guy who knows how to use it than the other way around.

If I'm going to use the studio, it has to offer something that I don't already. Being that I have drumsets, cabs, amps, guitars and basses galore as well as a good room and monitoring, it's very rare that I'd be interested in another facility. If I didn't have a facility, it would be a helpful nature from a solid musician who's just as strong on the musician side of things who can see the project through without me wanting to kill him after it. Very rare down here in South Florida.
