It's not modded, and I didn't shoot it out against other tube pre's. Assuming you're talking about spendy tube pre's, the peavey may well lose but it'd hold its head high in the process.

In truth, I just wanted a totally different flavor than (insert solid state pre here), and it fits the bill nicely. A touch loose in the low mids, creamy mids, neutral top, definite tube/transformer stamp. Sounds old and hazy, not new and shiny. $600. Win!

Once in the box, almost everything happens with the UBK-1 for compression, Waves MPX Tape for smoosh and its awesome slap delay, and Fabfilter for eq. Occasionally, I must admit I find the Bombfactory 1176 to be very handy for vintage-style limiting.

Hello Greg - Do you have another multi-channel D/A convertor or just the Burl?
Cheers

Yup, I own a 1176LN but prefer Waves 1176 on percussion (snare, OH etc)

Without getting into the hold recall and budget aspects I think software compression starts to get interesting when it does something hardware doesn't do. There's not a single 1176 emulation out there that I would pick over the real deal, and I think I might have tried all that are available in RTAS format. And why would I? One sounds right, the other tries to copy the sound of it. Not saying they're bad or anything but if you've already got the real deal, why not use it if that's what you want?

UBK-1 is one of those plugins that's different. To me, that's much more interesting than any 1176 emulations, even if they sport new very useful features (like the Softube FET Compressor). In that case the UBK-1 is a different tool than the hardware 1176. And as we've all been told many times - pick the right tool for the job.

I really hope we'll see more innovation and less emulation in 2012.

Cause it's different!
Waves is modelling the original and UAD the reissue.
Hardware LN works best on some things, the extra fast attack on UAD on some and the slower creamier vibe on Waves on others.

For d/a I use 2x Metric Halo 2882. The Burl is a/d only, as is the a2d.

Samplitude Ammunition compressor is more flexible than most compressors out there and is the bomb on a 2 bus and at the mastering stage. It can be very transparent, or it can add some pumping if needed. For more info, there are some tutorials on youtube. It is more on the clean sound and does not alter your signal, but glues your mix nicely.

Yeah when I want that hazing filtered sound over the track with some additional digital hardness, I reach for the software everytime.

DAW + Outboard with Summing. Although right now, just to see what's possible, I'm doing another mix purely ITB. I don't exactly love the tone, but it's got a ton of personality, a good deal more than my last all-console-all-the-time mix. It's hard to argue with that, and I'll choose vibe & personality over sonics anytime, without hesitation.

it seems like more people are using their outboard for tracking and then leaving it in the box. i don't mix much at my place because being in Nashville I can throw a rock at hit someone who can mix circles around me. But I have some nice compressors that I use to track. But for quick roughs the software comps do just fine. Shoot, Even the free Bombfactory 1176 that comes with PT gives me the feeling of the 1176 and I have Purple Mc77 in my rack.

Just did it.

Borrowed a friend's ssl clone, and tried for a couple of hours to get it how I wanted.

Ended up going with the Glue. Dunno. Maybe it's just this track, but is seemed to do just the pure pump I was looking for with no side effects.

Worked better in this case anyway.

Same here but I record the tracks with hardware back in the box. I actually use it in realtime with the new track armed so that I can monitor thru it. Sometimes, I will take a pic and save it with the session. Hardware almost always is preferred by me.

all this talk about the ubk-1 is making me antsy for the AU version to release. Good thing patience is my greatest virtue, I'm ready for this thing to replace just about every plug in compressor I use.

I pretty much just use the Logic plugs. I have one of the FRM RNLAs that I've used before, but only during initial tracking.
