Bouncing to tape from Pro Tools?

Are any of you guys hitting tape after you've already recorded the basic tracks? I've just recently purchased an Otari MX70 16track 1" machine. There are a couple of projects that I'd like to see hit the 'ol rust before I track them. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking forward to getting the tape machine wired up.

On your next project try hitting tape first

Yeah, hit tape first, even if ya just get it on tape via sync head and right to tape off repro head (you'll obviously have to nudge it in PT) You'll be happier with the results

1"16 tracked was mediocre back then, it's not going to sound any better now.

When engineers talk about how great tape sounds, that format is not what they are referring to.

There used to be an Otari MX70 1" 16 track at my place, but eventually upgraded to a MTR90 mkII 2" 24 track...IMO the difference was pretty huge. Not that the 1" sounded bad, but the 2" just seems to have that sound

FWIW, I've done just a couple very non-scientific tests, and the tape just doesn't seem to have the magic when you hit the DAW first, than bounce. You've gotta hit tape first. I tried to convince myself otherwise, because it's nice to track to PT, and comp takes and what not, but the sound just isn't there. Also keep in mind my A/D/A is pretty low end, so with better converters it may be a different story
