Put everything I've learned up to this point into this.

I've been recording since I was a kid on a 4 track, then an 8 track 1/4", then ADAT and so on. Didn't really get serious till about 10 years. Probably a large percentage of what I've learned I learned here on GS. I've also been mentored by some great people like Ryan Williams. I also love to watch recording DVDs, though most of them are pop/rock stuff with jangley guitars and shakers, nothing against it just not what personally inspires me, that's what Iove about learning from Ryan Williams, he's a real rocker dude and loves heavy music. I also have been digging on the Joe Barresi video, it's nice to see a behind the scenes of a pro making a metal/hard rock record. I wrote a song this past week and recorded the drums, bass and rhythm tracks yesterday and today and applied some things I saw Joe doing, most of them I knew but some I had either forgot or just didn't take the time to do them. One in particular was running bass through a guitar amp to blend with the SVT. That is a good one, I also used my Beta 52 on the bass cab, that was killer. I use to do that I got away from it. Anyway here are some clips from the past couple of days. The guitar and bass sounds are the best I have ever gotten. The acoustic guitar with the Lauten/312 combo was stunning. I blended 2 guitar amps for heavies; modded Marshall and Racto, both through Rectifier cabs with a blend of 57/421/PR20 on both cabs. Used Neve, API and EM mic pres. Putting an OCD pedal in front of the Racto made it come to life and feel and sound right to me. The guitar sound took a little while to get. Man mic placement is everything, finding not only the sweet spot but hearing what tones are missing or over powering and using mics to achieve the fullest, well balanced sound. Curtain mic placements actually took away gain, It was strange as though sections of the speaker don't translate crunch as well. I hope to do the vocals the end of next week, unfortunately I am sick as hell, so gotta get through this first. Then I will track vocals and mix. Anyway, I am so happy with this track I can't tell you and I'm grateful to GS for helping me, I really feel like I'm turning a corner creatively and technically and that the future looks bright.

Raw unmixed tracks from today:

Kudos, man. The bass sound is sick. Love the snare too.

Too bad this kind of thorough and creative approach to tracking is becoming so rare nowadays... Who's gonna mix this?

Powerful stuff James. The sound is superb and the music is rock solid. Love to hear real instruments played by freaks into their tone.

Be well and keep on trackin',

- Cheers

It's great the neighbours are nice.

If you ever want a more "goodlooking" solution, I came acrosse the hermit iso cabs.

The Hermit ISO cabs are used by Guns and Roses.... And others...

Or the box of DOOM...

Iso Cabinet - the next generation. Meet the Box of Doom

Boxes like these were allso used by Iron Maiden I'm told. But I cannot really verify that...

EDIT.....

Found this;

Very insightful, James! Picked up a new trick with the zooming for mic placement. Thanks for doing this.

Jeez I'm finally back on the tune, a lot going on. I find I have to really push to do my own stuff, it's weird you'd think me owning a studio it be a breeze but it's not. Anyway, I'm back. I started singing the song today about 60% intensity just to get the flow, lyrics and story back in my head. Also getting my voice warmed up. Gonna track vocals starting tomorrow, not sure if I will get finished tracks it's been a while since I've really dug in vocally but either way we are back on. I want it finished and mastered asap.

Wow this song is hard to sing. It felt good to get behind the mic though. I went with 87>1073>1176. Filtered at 50 and 1 db cut at 110 and hitting about 4db on the loud spots at 4:1. It's most likely gonna take me a week or 2 to really own the hook but the we'll finish it up.
