It's hard to tell from those pictures. Try to get a closeup shot of the lugs/casings that the rim bolts attach to. Is there a 'badge' on any of the vent holes?

Anything stamped or written on the inside? Is there a finish, or is it natural wood?

And this is your buddy? Well, just take them off his hands for free. He's probably just trying to free up some storage space, so you'd be doing him a favor. If they're crap, you can be the responsible one by selling them at the local drum shop, pawn store or craigslist. If they're cool and rockin', do the right thing and send them all to me.

Contrary to belief, some of those old Japanese-made kits are pretty cool and have good workmanship. Silvertone sold some made in Japan kits. A friend has one and it sounds great. There is another brand it could be, but I will have to ask another friend what his kit is. I can not remember at the moment. I want to say Baxter but I could be wrong.

Does he have the bottom rims for the toms? They seem to be missing in the photo. If not, you're looking at putting some money into the kit to get it operational, unless you're looking for the '70s concert tom sound. A new set of rims, lugs & skins could easily add up to another $200-$300.
