Turn off the conductor, highlight the tempo, and tap the "T" key.

it's there... just different. I personally find my timing to be much tighter on a keyboard than on a mouse button

Much better then the mouse...

It's a bit of a hassle to do but it's much much better then working out tapping with the mouse. Would be nice if you could tap the tempo into the conductor. I end up tapping in the tempo in, and then putting that number into the session so I can get the connductor back on.

The red flag should still be in the edit window on the tempo line....double click and enter value. IIRC I was on 6.7 or 7.0

I really dont care for some of the changes to tempo functions. I am glad they added new features, but it has become much more difficult to enter simple tempo changes. Maybe there are ways to do it now I am not aware of. But I miss being able to click on a bar and simply type the tempo. done.

jules...
i really debated whether to reply to you.
but what the heck. all i can hope is your open minded.
for the longest time the focus of pro tools was very much audio based rather than midi based. whereas the focus at the beginning in what i use was very midi centric. now its both ...for example a real time audio analyser was added in
the latest version release of powertracks.
anyway back to the midi side. for the longest time many tools users used what i use because of certain midi features missing in tools.
for example setting up midi tempo is "bog" easy. (give my love to london btw...
i was born there. i'm going there next month to visit family/friends).
anyway back to midi. you can tap it . change it and do lots of other "fings".
includeing gradual tempo changes. in fact there are a slew of midi features too numerous for me to mention. and very unique stuff like high ppqn for strict timing.
plus prolly the most in depth midi editing you will find as well as notation editing.
If you doubt me talk to other users on the pg forums and try the demo.
Unfortunately often you will find its users who have been doing midi for years
that will use what i use compared to newbies often...because it takes a lot of understanding of midi to realise the usefulness of certain powertracks features.
this is no put down of folks new to recording jules. if you check the pg forums youll see they are full of very many midi experienced folks who know every
midi trick in the book.
just simple stuff like a clean up dialog for midi guitarists or a piano or guitar or bass display showing notes being played. and other subtle stuff like a slash chord ability or the ability to import a midi file and powertracks will attempt to interpret the chords in a file. and ive just scratched the surface jules. there are other things like the ability to automate useing CC.
anyways. dont rag on me. in reply. just try it yourself sometime on any old reasonably current pc...and really delve into all the features.
it costs nothing to try the demo from pg.
maybe some of these features like notation editing etc are of no interest to you,
like a feature built in that analyzes a midi data stream.
but all i'm suggesting is on one of those lazy summer days in london instead of visiting the pub one night and blowing 20 quid....download powertracks and you might find its 20 quid well spent.
If you doubt me read the hundreds of kudoses includeing from profs of music in the pg guest book. youll be surprised if you give it a chance.
all the best.
ps...what a lot of tools users do is do their midi tracks in powertracks then import
into pro tools, or alternatively you can render your midi tracks in powertracks to audio and import wave into tools.peace.
ps i forgot check out the built in drum grid editor sometime as well as the master midi tuning feature that lets you change tuning on midi sound cards and sound modules.

jules...
i forgot to mention something very important and i'm sure its a studio midi problem your familiar with.
cos i was doing it today.
lets say you have this nice midi drum track.
but then you decide that the drum fill at bar 18 should really be at bar 24.
its very easy to do this in powertracks. each bar of each track is a small square.
All you do is hilite the square at bar 18 edit/cut ..then place the cursor at
bar 24 and edit/one track paste. then fill in bar 18 with a copy from another bar.
another good example of midi problems is...you play back the midi tracks with the audio tracks and at one point you find the midi drum track say is just "out slightly"
from the drum track. its a simple procedure to realign the drum track at that point.
there are also other neat tricks. for example i can generate bass midi tracks from the drum track pattern midi. a slew of tricks.
if you get stuck i'll be happy to help with any feature as ive been useing it so long. oh i forgot. check out the automation features for midi (and audio tracks).
the support is superb and free and on line. plus no dongles.
ps....i miss the london mini skirts of my youth lol.
"up the apples and pears now fer me mate"...grandad was a cockney....lol.
