Lightbulb Upgrading the Audiophile 2496

I'm running the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 through a Behringer mixer. I've been planning on upgrading my Audiophile for awhile now, to an RME ADI-2.

But I just stupidly realized that it's a convertor, not a soundcard.

Umm, how do I do this? Should I just get a higher-end soundcard instead?

Do I need BOTH a better soundcard and a convertor?

Or do I get the RME and use it with my Audiophile?

I also plan on getting a good preamp and monitor controller to replace my mixer.

I would consider getting a multichannel soundcard by RME, MOTU, or Lynx. Preferably one with plenty of digital i/o built in. That way you can upgrade your converters later without having to change your souncard. I'm using a MOTU 2408mkII with a RADAR24 as the front/back end while tracking and a Lavry Blue 2chn D/A for mixing/mastering playback.

The 2496 (if its the one I'm thinking of, the same one I have) you can just run the s/pdif out of the back of the rme into the s/pdif in on your 2496.

This is exactly what I plan to do tomorrow...my ADI-2 arrived today.

The s/pdif ports on the 2496 dont hit the converters on the card, they just carry the signal to the PC. The conversion is done by the RME.

Hope that makes sense.
