You can built an SCA preamp for around 600-700 USD. Any of the four.

If you must have new, your price range would probably call for the FMR RNP. However, if you're willing to buy used, you will get SOOO much more because the quality goes way up at the new for $1000 mark. If you can find a Great River on eBay for $800, jump all over it.

Only thing decent in your price range i can think of appart from the RNP would be 'The Brick' by Groove Tubes.

If you had more to play with then i could think of quite a few more options.

Seventh Circle Audio. It's DIY preamp kit. Great and amazing sounds from what I hear (i'm about to embark on building them myself... (2) N72s and (2) C84's.)

It's great if you are handy with an iron, or want to learn quickly! Not exactly for the total beginner, but if you can build a guitar pedal and wire your own patchbay, you should be fine. The instructions are really clear.

When you build an 8 channel box, it gets between 300-400 USD/channel in cost for what sound like 1,000+ USD/channel preamps. Very nice!
