this won't be helpful, but I just wanted to comment about how I've always thought AKG must DESPISE how apex went and ripped off the model number of a famous and great AKG mic for a bizarre yet sometimes quite good (but certainly not in AKG territory), low budget, chinese tube condensor vocal mic.

k, back to your regularly scheduled discussion.

The AKG 460 preamp, ring adapter and CK1 capsule re-defines crisp! You want to cut someone's inner-ears out? Bam, there's your tool. I use this on snare all the time and it's just the most beautiful thing. A KM84 is considerably darker and bears little to no resemblance to the type of sound a 460/ck1 will give you.

personally I find the 451's to be brighter than the 460's. But I agree it's a great snare mic. It sounds more like the drum to me.

Yep, but once you overload the 460, lordy, it sounds nasty.

That's why I prefer 480s. They may be a tiny fraction worse sounding, but they don't distort in such a nasty way.

I've never done that, it's never had a problem with recording a snare drum.

I own both, and funny I just listed my 460's for sale a few hours ago and just came across this thread.

The 480's to my ears are darker than the 460's. Also, to my ears, the KM84's are very good but believe have a kick around the 4K-5K khz range. The 451's are definitely a bright mic - no two ways about it and it's an artificial harsh bright to my ears. The 460's smoothed everything out and took away that harshness. The 460's are great mics for a lot of purposes. I use mine for ambient recording and soloist recording and they do a very nice job. They are rock-solid, a mic I can trust. I'm only selling mine because I have 480's for the rest of my inventory and there is (splitting hairs) a different signature sound to them - not nearly as drastic as the 460's are to the 451's, but enough that I want to have all the same mics. If I had more of the 460's I would be selling the 480's. I tend for my work to want a little more of the - I'll say "smooth brilliance" to it than the almost dull 480's - but what I call dull is really more accurate. It's like a Grace preamp on the 480's - what you hear is what's really there.
