What the hell happened to this 60's SM58 of mine?!

So I have this very old SM58 from the 60's (possibly early 70's) and it stopped working, smelt weird, bla bla

I open the XLR connector and there is brown goo everywhere! Has anyone seen anything like this? It looks like a melted chocolate bar inside!

I know about Shure's excellent repair policy of sending it in, paying $60'ish or so and getting a brand new mic back. But being how old this thing is, I'd really like to have this fossil back up and running.

Looks like the potting got burnt and oozed out. Something must have shorted or burnt out inside of it. The glue might make it hard to work on if it got all over the faulty part(s).

A guess, maybe the transformer had a shorted winding and the microphone was used on an energized phantom powered circuit. Just a guess, lol.
