Thread Starter | Getting a fizzle/crackle at all volumes on distorted guitar
Hey, all! Been tracking rhythm electric guitar and I get a fizzle/crackle at all volumes thru my monitors (Event TR8s) as a sustained note or chord kind of builds then starts its decay. I've tried all the usual suspects, eliminated gear piece by piece from the chain, tried all the pots and faders on everything for dirty spots, switched channels on the console.....No matter what channel, volume level, fader level, trim position on the gain it makes no difference; I get the fizzle. So I checked out the guitar amp (Peavey Ultra on the high gain setting). Can't find a vibration on the amp causing it. I've piped other signal thru the chain and even change the guitar and I lose it, weird! ![]() I'm running a Fender Strat Deluxe straight to the guitar amp. It's cranked pretty good, tubes are cooking good into the 4-10s. One speaker is mic'd close with an older Shure 545 and another with an AKG 414 B-ULS in cardiod. Both mics are about 3/8" from the grille. Like I said, when I change to the Les Paul I lose the fizzle/ crackle. Any ideas what's going on? Are my Event TR8's just crappy enough that they fart out on a certain sympathetic frequency? |

I don't understand ... you say you have identified it as specific to the guitar, so why look any further? Fix that damn guitar.

Let me clarify. The guitar itself is fine. Through other amps I don't get the offending sound. I just wondered if there is some kind of build up of frequencies or something that is causing all this? When I play back the guitar tracks through other monitors I don't get the fizzle going on. And with other signals, the TR8's act fine. |

sometimes a certain instrument, particularly a miked acoustic instrument wiht a lot of mids, can push a loudspeaker driver into rattling a little bit. I have this on one piano recording through my 3 way mains.. the 2 inch dome mid in one side is obviously just a little bit more "broken in" than the one in the other channel and it vibrates noisily on one certain note each time. so with me it means I need to replace or repair that midrange (damnit). but for you it could just be an indication of something that needs some eqing in your guitar sound, either from the amp or in the mix itself.

Thanks! That sounds identical to what I'm experiencing. I'll start the "surgical" eq, then move on to a little speaker surgery if need be. | |
