new ribbon for fat head

Hi gearslutz. Where in the world do you find a corrugated 2.5 micron ribbon for replacement of a torn ribbon?

i have a fat head that could use a new ribbon as well. anyone know of a person who fixes these? thanks

I know you can send it directly to Cascade and they'll replace the ribbon for $75. I'm personally more interested in learning how to do it myself and experimenting with tensions. There has to be a distributor somewhere in America.

Ok, after quite a bit of google research trial and error, I've found these two American companies sell aluminum sheets. Lebow sells it in 1.8 and 2.5 microns. I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow. I still need to devise a way to corrugate the ribbons. If you have any suggestions speak up.

That's exactly what I was going to say! Check this place out. The price is right. He has the little gears for making the corrugations and enough leaf in a sheet to replace a number of ribbons. Plus his ribbon leaf material really is 2.5 microns versus the 6 micron stuff that is in most Chinese ribbon microphones. If your Fathead had the thicker ribbon material, you will potentially find a bit more output and better fidelity from your mic after the new ribbon is installed.

Oh yes, and this DIY ribbon mic site also will give you pointers on how to replace the ribbon material as well as how to tune the ribbon. This is an excellent resource. Buy stuff from this guy. He spent a lot of time researching the ribbon mic and compiling the stuff for folks just like us to benefit from. And he makes the information readily available for everyone to use.
