awesomeness for me! Only thing better than a la610 is 2 of them with a free uad2 duo card!
La610mkll is the best buy tight now.. Clean or butter warm sound...
Act. gtrs / Vocal / Bass..
Yeah, I'm taking full advantage of that deal, for sure! I may or may not keep the LA610, as I really am after the UAD-2, but it would be kind of a waste not to at least try the unit out, haha. If I was the originator of this thread, I'd grab the LA610, work with that for a while, get the free UAD-2 and just sell the LA610 later, if it didn't give him what he wanted.

Then you'll get back to it, and within days you will begin to think about which compressor to get next, and how long it'll take to scrounge up another $1500" - UBK

Sparkz,

I say, find a used GAP73 (Neve style), and also take advantage of the LA610 MKII deal, where you get the free UAD-2 card. You want some color/thickness, along with clarity, and one of these preamp styles (Neve vs tube) should be a good starting point for experimentation.

They'll cost you under $2000 together.

1. If you don't like the GAP73, you can sell it for what you paid.
2. If you don't like the LA610 MKII, you can sell the LA610, and still keep the UAD-2, and you'll have gotten the UAD-2 for really cheap (some very nice plugins now added to your arsenal). Then, you can either keep the GAP73, or sell it as well, and buy a different preamp with Neve flavor, if you want something different (Avedis MA5, BAE 1073, Aurora Audio GTQ2, etc.....research them and others).

3. You might not like either, and would then be able to determine if a clean preamp is more up your alley (Focusrite ISA One, John Hardy M1, Grace 101, Avalon 737, etc), or you just need need a variation of the Neve/tube design (Great River ME-1NV is said to be on the clean side with input and output functioning of a Neve, while the Blue Robbie is said to be a clean tube design, that thickens without a ton of color).

I think you'll find something, once you try units out. You can waste a lot of time reading, or you can buy used, audition and keep, or sell and move on to the next. With your mic having a bright top end, I have a hunch you'll be happy with something of the Neve or tube variation.

I just don`t get the hate...
Just wanted to point out that the Avalon's I was talking about were not the 737. Probably a similar pre and comp to the 737, but the 2022 and 2044 are not tube. I know of a lot of people that use or have had the 737 in their studios. Some of them have replaced their Avalon with the Martech preamp, which in my opinion, is definitely better than any of the Avalon pre's I have used to track with. I do know that there are many people that love the 737, and I'm sure it gets them the sound they are after. I'm a former Grace and Avalon pre owner. My opinion of avalon products and grace products is they don't sound "big" enough. To me an API/Neve sounds like a record. So I tell people that's how you get that "record" sound...coupled with a good compressor, not hitting too hard, 1176/LA-2A/LA-3A/Tube-Tech/Distressor. When you stack them up you really hear a difference. On a guitar/vocal it may not make much difference what pre's you use to an extent. But I find really clean stuff doesn't mesh well with other instruments in a mix.
