I say, find a used GAP73 (Neve style), and also take advantage of the LA610 MKII deal, where you get the free UAD-2 card. You want some color/thickness, along with clarity, and one of these preamp styles (Neve vs tube) should be a good starting point for experimentation. They'll cost you under $2000 together. 1. If you don't like the GAP73, you can sell it for what you paid. 2. If you don't like the LA610 MKII, you can sell the LA610, and still keep the UAD-2, and you'll have gotten the UAD-2 for really cheap (some very nice plugins now added to your arsenal). Then, you can either keep the GAP73, or sell it as well, and buy a different preamp with Neve flavor, if you want something different (Avedis MA5, BAE 1073, Aurora Audio GTQ2, etc.....research them and others). 3. You might not like either, and would then be able to determine if a clean preamp is more up your alley (Focusrite ISA One, John Hardy M1, Grace 101, Avalon 737, etc), or you just need need a variation of the Neve/tube design (Great River ME-1NV is said to be on the clean side with input and output functioning of a Neve, while the Blue Robbie is said to be a clean tube design, that thickens without a ton of color). I think you'll find something, once you try units out. You can waste a lot of time reading, or you can buy used, audition and keep, or sell and move on to the next. With your mic having a bright top end, I have a hunch you'll be happy with something of the Neve or tube variation. | |
