Mackie HUI or Digi002

I am getting the Digi002 rack if i get the Mackie HUI. So should I get the Digi002 mixing board or get a Mackie HUI W/002 Rack? Any advice would be great.

I own both a 002 (PTLE) and a HUI which I use on one of my TDM systems.

The 002 mixer all-in-one is convenient as it also includes the PT interface and MIDI.
However, the HUI has more functionality button wise and...very important for me...a talk back mic.
FWIW communication with the HUI is via MIDI.

The prices have dropped significantly on the HUI as it has been around for several years now. I've owned mine since 1999. It is built like a tank and has served me well with no problems so far. When the 002 is shelved by the newer 003 it will be hard to substantiate keeping the mixer as a controller. The HUI, in spite of PT hardware upgrades remains a useful controller for me.

I used the name 003 merely as an example. The 002 is an all-in-one system based around PTLE. It is a fixed unit. Whenever Digi comes out with their next generation of PTLE hardware i.e. 001, 002........>003? the 002 will become obsolete moreso because it houses converters etc. pertinent technology that directly effects the sonic qualities. The HUI is simply a controller and so long as Digi retains the HUI profile it will work regardless of hardware upgrades acting as the PT interface.

This may not matter in your situation but the Digi 002 Rack with the HUI is a bit more portable rig than the digi 002 with control surface. On remote gigs, you just pack up a laptop and the 002R and go, then come back to the studio later to mix with the control surface.
Cheers,
-Mike

i was using a command8 w/ HD for a while and ended up moving to a mackie universal control

im pretty sure that the command8 has pretty much all the same stuff that the 002 has

When I actually started getting into using the control surface i quickly became underwhelmed..... i was wishing for more capability control wise

the MCU does everything i want it to plus more....... and its expandable as well which is def a plus
