Weathervane Multitracks - Snowmine

Here's the last one for the year!

We have a new Shaking Through episode coming Tuesday (Nov 15, 2011). This time the band is Brooklyn experimentals, Snowmine, curated by our old friend Mark Schoneveld of YVYNYL music blog. The song, Curfews, was produced by me this time, with engineering assistance and a brilliant mix from good ole' Jonathan Low.

Snowmine’s songs are primarily written by singer and keyboardist, Grayson Sanders, a student of classical composition under esteemed composers Jerica Oblak and Justin Dello Joio at NYU, before more recently turning his attention to indie music. In addition to his work in Snowmine, Sanders leads the Aytia|Matia Experiential Performance Group, and is founder of the experimental interactive media startup, Shape Massive. Sanders is joined in Snowmine by guitarists Calvin Pia and Austin Mendenhall, drummer Alex Beckmann, and bassist Jay Goodman. Earlier this year, Snowmine released their debut LP Laminate Pet Animal.

The feature videos and MP3 will come out this Tuesday, but like we've been doing a while now, we are sharing the raw tracks BEFORE we put up OUR final mix and mix-stems. … So here it is again! Go nuts! Do what you do and don't worry about what we do!

This time, we were so honored to have microphones provided by AEA. Yes... we're not kidding. It was awesome. One track of our doubled lead vocal, as well as the mono overhead, was recorded with the AEA 44. We also had a pair of C12s from Telefunken Elektroakustik, so with that we recorded the other vocal and we also used the pair to complete our overhead set-up. Man, oh man. Classy. If you have a chance, try to mix the drums with just overheads and kick drum. You might pull it off! Except then you'll hear the compressed pair of AEA 840s out in front of the kit. Let's just say this is a really really cool drum recording.

Thanks again to Scott Wilson from Scratch Studio in NY for hosting the files .... This whole year, Scott allowed us to put all the files we shared on his server. That's a major donation to this great project, and we'll forever appreciate that.

Happy to help - It's a great service you guys provide for the bands and for the engineering community!

Everyone think about it! SHOW 'EM SOME LOVE! Give something back. I for one can attest that hosting these huge files for you guys is not cheap. Send a few bucks

I only use reberv and some compression to the voices.
The tracks are really fine recorded and there's nothing more to do.
This track reminds me John Anderson and Vangelis album, and i tried to recreate that sound. Really really nice song.

What do you mean?

Do you hear mine sounding like Alvin and the Chipmunks?

no, but a faster tempo and a slightly different key ; have you imported the tracks as a 44.1/24 session or 48KHz ?

Obviously.
And I don't import tracks to the DAW, simply drag them into the arrengment window.

Daw does the right thing.

And as a musician, I hear mine in tune.

You don't?

It's "in tune", yes, no problem with that ; but probably the very bright tonality of the vocal and the emphasis on the fast drone in the intro gave me the impression of the speed up. My bad.

Back to this great song & performance, and hi quality tracks

Nice mix gouge.

Maybe mine sounds different by the use of "aphex" effect in the out bus of the mix.

Greetings.

thanks kamikase,

have you checked out the Soneq eq for your masterbus, there is a preset in it called exciter that seems to do a great job. nice sounding eq in general.

Yep, i know that, but sometimes that preset, if you abuse a little and have too sharp tracks, it makes crackle sounds.

Here's my mix: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23356772/Sno...MTS%20Mix1.mp3

I had a lot of fun with this! Was a very inspiring tune to work with. Everytime I listened to it I had a rush of ideas to try, it was hard keeping track of them all.

It's my first mix since putting in some extra acoustic treatment - so I might shave a couple of dB off the kick below 60Hz.

Thanks heaps for the tracks!

This song is a beauty! Will be the first song I'm going to mix on my new studio monitors which are arriving in a couple of days. Thanks for introducing us to all those great artists and making it possible for us to work with some high quality recordings!

Thanks,
