Problems with ex-29 headphones breaking?

So, is it just me? I had a pair of other iso phones that I'd had for a number of years. They stopped working like a month ago or so. So, I couldn't afford it but I had to have something, so I got a pair of ex-29 phones. I had used them just a couple times (not abused in any way at all) when I reached up to take them off and there was a loud snap and suddenly I was holding the two ear pieces and the middle section went flying away.

So I sent them back, Sweetwater replaced them without any questions asked. I got them last week used them a couple of times for maybe 30 minutes each, then tonight went in to record some more and once again, I reached up to take them off, pulling them apart just enough to get them off my head, and bang. Only one side broke off this time, but still they are now once again useless.

Do I just have some massively oversided head or something? I'm not pulling them far apart, just enough to get them on and off. I'm worried my Sweetwater guy is going to start thinking I'm a nut case and breaking these things on purpose or something. And of course I don't really want to get another pair of these, and they don't have anything else really in the high isolation realm, so I'd need to get a refund as well.

So I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem, to know if it's just me or what.

I had 2 or 3 pairs of these and never broke any of them.

Don't know why, but I laughed out loud at this.

Never any problems with mine either. Apparently they're built to be easy to service yourself, not that you should have to in your case, but fwiw in case you get a good pair that break later on. Haven't heard of any QC issues with them.

I was actually kind of worried he would. I mean, what are the odds that two sets would both break after just a few uses. I obviously just have a gigantic head, obviously not due to brain size requirements. That must be whil I hear that rattling sound up there all the time.

Not good

No it isn't you.
We have loads of 10 quid headphones in our department, and they take years to break even with use by my A level music tech lads. However these ex-29s are seriously weak, we had two pairs snap as you describe within days, and also coming adrift in other ways.

Very telling that the company sent spare parts very quickly without question.

They act like they're user repairable, but a) you can't fix shorn off plastic, and b) if you buy a decent brand you don't need to repair them!

Plastics Issue

I had the unique opportunity to speak with Direct Sound/Extreme Headphones directly and they said that they have already corrected the problem with the plastic manufacturer. Something about the plastics co. not letting the mold set right, so they've changed it and upgraded the material to avoid any future problems. If you do have an issue, they replace it for free, same day. Easy enough. Definitely worth the investment.

Yup, just chiming in to agree. My second set just broke. Too bad I threw my last pair away (could have just gotten a replacement head piece). Anyway, they are amazing as sound booth headphones, otherwise I'd look for a different brand. You can blast these and get no bleed in your mic.

Just a little update. Seems like a good company. They are sending me two headbands for free right away and did state that they are now improved. So that's pretty nice (too bad I threw away my first pair!)

I just snapped my replacement band on my new ex-29's. I'm embarrassed to ask for another new band. I might just duct tape them to my head and stop torturing the poor company...

LOL. Last night when mine broke, we were thinking of using one of those sweat bands that popular in the 70s.

Hi folks, for those who haven't seen the video on the new headbands (post winter 2011), here it is! NoHype Audio Home Page

I'm happy to report that the new bands are indeed as flexible as the video claims.

Wow, I don't dare to try that bending trick with my last replacement that managed to last for a month or so now.

I previously broke three head-bands with no excessive abuse involved - just taking them on and off the head and they broke. This was obviously usual with the old plastic head-band of EX-29.

This new one seems to work, but I'm not sure that I have that extremely flexible one. The plastic doesn't feel that flexible and I won't try in fear of breaking them one more time. Till they last - all is well and I'm happy with those cans. Really great isolation and powerful bassy sound, very useful for tracking!

And of course - thank you again for sending those replacements for free and so quickly!

As I recall you got the ones right before the "official" release of the new bands, they now have a red inside band (under the leatherette pad). As far as I can tell the ones you gotwill do the job but I wouldn't flex the middle part as shown - only try this with the new red band. The black band, which you have, is probably not as flexible but it wasn't the part that broke... the replacement you got has the proper end parts. Phew, are we all confused enough ;O)
