Crime of the Century

I can't believe I missed that Ken Scott was in the house.

Not to pile it on, but wow!

Some of the folks around here already know my love of this record.

If I was stuck on an island somewhere, with only one record, this would be the one.

Ken, thanks for helping to make such a masterpiece for the ears.

Yes. There are some profound moments of production on that album and they are much to Ken's credit.

A lot of things came into focus for 'Tramp at that time - and having Ken at the desk was undoubtedly one of the crucial ingredients. As others have said, the production on the original release of Crime Of The Century holds up very well even in retrospect, but when it was released in 1975 it broke new ground IMO - upped the ante for all of us. I know it showed me personally some things that until then I hadn't realised were possible.

All in all, a piece of work to be remembered!

Crime of the Century - One of the reasons why I love to do this job!
All the kids in school were listening to the Partidge Family and Donny Osmand in grade 6 while I was into Supertramp.

For 30 (!) years, "Crime" has been one of the few records that I choose when "getting used to" a new room/set of monitors. Once Upon A Decade, I used a 15 IPS 2 track dub made from a Mobile Fidelity vinyl release (I literally wore out two of the MF vinyls over time) for my "new room" listening tests, but alas, that tape copy went all sticky-shed on me.

I only wish that the "classic rock" radio stations would play something else besides "Bloody Well Right" <g>.

You are "Bloody Well Right" about that, Bri.

Unfortunately, you are probably also being a "Dreamer".

It is available on 180 gram vinyl. These are better than the Mobile Fidelity versions i.m.o. And much cheaper. 30 bucks new!

Quiet, dynamic, makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

Everything the "digital remasters" dream of being, but aren't.

I had to spin the whole record, at a nice respectable volume.
Trying to figure out what is so good about it.

Dynamics!

As dynamic as any symphony. At times, quiet as a mouse, and then, it is just thundering.
I have to look over at the volume knob to see if it somehow moved.

And that kick drum on Hide In Your Shell..
Man, that thing moves some air.

So what is the reverb on Asylum's cukoo clock? thumbsup

Once again, Chad Kassem (sp?) to the rescue! Chad is an interesting cat, and Acoustic Sounds is the financial backing for his Labor of Love studio there in Salina:

I recently spent some time there doing repairs/refurb on the Neve 5106 desk...some digipix dumped from my camera:

Hi Mr. Scott.
What are in your opinion and in a few words the Key elements for great production?
Thanks!

Sheesh Joaquin. Give the man a break. Talk about asking for the Atlantic Ocean delivered to you in a teacup!?!

But if you want the "short version" you could scout around and find:

... Pearl Harbour in a teacup, maybe.

Ken, thanks for helping to make such a masterpiece for the ears.

It's certainly in my top 10 of all time. I recently got a swish tube headphone amp and listening to Crime on my Senn HD600s really showed very few flaws for this era of record.

I usually listen to quality stuff like this from the 70's in headphones shaking my head in disbelief. I mean, hearing the passion on records like this makes you wonder if we've learned anything in last 30 years. If we get most of today's records and take all of the excruciating compression and limiting away and then revert the perfectly corrected timing and pitch ..... would the records sound any better?

Since the 70's, even great innovations like full automation are probably both a blessing and a curse because mixes are no longer "performed" which was a living and breathing organism in its own right.

Anyway, enough crap - back to my perfectly tuned, timed, automated and compressed mixes. © 2006

I picked up a Technics SL-1200 Mk 2 last week, and unpacked my records that were in storage for literally 25 years. One of the first I played was Crime of the Century...I've had the CD for years and listened to it periodically for nostalgia sake, and kinda felt something was missing or lost from the experience. Well let me tell you the vinyl gave me chills - from the first harmonica in School to the growl of the Wurlie in Bloody Well Right, the vinyl had what was missing - the life, the punch, the warmth - I've heard some examples of what bad conversion can do to degrade a track, but never have I heard it to that extent... and this was an original disc, crackles and pops and all, but even my wife who claims to have a tin ear commented "wow that really sounds good"

So I log in to browse this morning and "Crime of the Century" is situated immediately above "Recording Banjo".

Yeah, get the new 180 gram vinyl. thumbsup

Isn't it funny that this is how everybody used to listen to their music? And they were more demanding about sound quality. Welcome to the age of the MP3.
