I WON!

I won the violet contest and will be receiving a JZ-1 microphone. Im so excited, I have a full electrostatic speaker system and always thought that someone should build an electrostatic mic. Now I get to try one for free. It looks like I might be the first person in America to hear this mic. Ill report back when I have tried it out.

I don't understand how there can be two winners of the API contest. I'm pretty sure I'm the winner of that, and if I'm the winner, how can you be?

Does... not... compute...

I've never been so excited about a contest where I didn't know what the prize was.

Maybe not so general purpose but here's a well-reputed electrostatic product available in the states:

i used one of those schertler's the other night on a double bass. to start with it was quite disconcerting but after about five minutes you appreciate the accuracy of these mics. so cheers on the win and please post pics and your thoughts on it

cheers

I just spent some time today demoing the Dyn-V and the Stat-V. I went in intent on getting the Dyn-V since I was told it would give a better representation of the acoustic resonance of the instrument. Even with a lot of trial and error on placement the Dyn-V sounded rather boxy with far too much midrange. I was able to get a decent tone with a lot of eq but all I was doing was polishing the proverbial turd. The Dyn-V did not pick up timbrel variations well at all, especially sul pont or other bowing effects.

I was concerned that the Stat-V would have too much rosin in the sound but overall I was much more pleased with how it conveyed the overall sound of the instrument. There's a little rumble and noise with each bow stroke but a nice shelving filter should take care of most of that. And I saved about $200. Not bad.

(Sorry for the hijack; the Stat-V is a violin/viola electrostatic microphone that you place in the "eye hole" of the instrument's bridge. I'm not sure how the electrostatic transducers work but I stand impressed for this application.)

Let us know when you get the mic!

No they exist, they just aren't supposed to in the United States. If you look at the website the US is just about the only country not listed as having distributors. Blue's case against them only held up on the US. Either way a mic's a mic and if it gets the job done then cool.

I didn't know the results would be out so fast. Congratulations! Thanks for posting about this, I always wonder if there's a winner and if they're going to get any use out of the prize.
