If cash is an issue check out the Senn MD431, instead of the 441. They can be found quite cheaply. Obviously a compromise, but less $$$

This is all second-hand information, as I haven't used one ever, but you might want to look into and research that one if you haven't already.

While I love the M201 and use it constantly, it still sounds like a dynamic mic to me. The M88 is a lot closer to a condenser sound. There have been some suggestions for the EV N/D468. I like this mic a lot, in particular for it's exceptionally smooth and extended high end. The word "condenser" doesn't pop into my head when I use it, but it's an excellent, relatively unrecognized mic. And then, as others have mentioned, there's the Sennheiser 441.

I have used them both and use them both regularly. The 431 and the 441 have the same capsule. the 431 has built in foam over the capsule to make it more focused as a handheld vocal mike. Maybe that's where the reduced freq. response comes from? I dunno, but like the 441 it has a high end lift that makes it kinda condensor like. Cool mic. sounds great on hi-hats. YMMV.

The internal EV passive circuit has 6 elements not including the capsule and the output transformer.
This is only true with modern RE20s Older, point to point, RE20s used a different output transformer and very few passive components.

with that I'll concur the RE20 when driven with a proper preamp can sound very condenser like.

In fact, it was marketed as the 'Condenser Killer'.

The transformers in the SM7 and RE20 are quite low tech
the older MU shielded output transformers are a much different animal than what you'll find in a modern RE20

The DM20 has a custom wound voice coil with an dc resistance of 200 ohm so no output transformer is required to match the recordist's microphone preamp.......and the DM20 is much better at handling fast transients especially in the percussion region.
ah, but the RE20 doesn't use a high mass coil so I'd be hard pressed to believe that a heavier coil would translate fast transients any better? I've not any experience with the DM20 so I'm not arguing, maybe I need to get one.

The EV N/D468 has a freq range of 30-22,000! I'd say that's an "extended range... Though it still isn't the so-called "condenser killer" the RE20 or MD441 are...
