Unhappy with bass tones

I've been running di into either sca j99, profire or fireface pres and I can't get happy with anything. All different basses and players.

I would probably prefer to mic an ameg. Or maybe a la-610

What is your favorite solution for bass?

If I'm working with a DI, I'll compress it, then limit it, then send it into an amp sim. Straight DI signals don't usually work well for me, unless they've been seriously compressed/limited, and eq'd. I'll also send a little bit into a short room verb, if the bass isn't sitting with the rest of the mix.

I run through a REDDI Tube DI by A-Designs.

Kicks serious ass with any bass I run through it.

I've heard good stuff about those. I am curious to hear some clips

What gear do you run through? Pre? or use a compressor as the pre?

I use a DI (not picky, I have a cheap Samson active that sounds good, and a custom one with a cinemag that works well, too) into whatever preamp I have open, usually a PM1000 channel or maybe a 1084 clone. No compression during tracking, generally.

I use a Joemeek SC-VC1 studio channel. It is great for bass.....really controls the signal even if you are hitting it hard. it also has an enhancer channel which will allow you to get the slap bass sound quite easily.

I always like a mic on the cab and a DI. A little dirt can really help the bass sit. Just a kiss!

Pendulum MDP is a great bass DI. I like to put some LA2A compression on it too. My biggest preference is DI and mic on cab with a tube amp. TAB V72 is another great bass DI.

I am going to be tracking a bassist in a couple of days who is bringing an amp sim. I am going to be tracking him direct into an LA 610. (I do not have a bass cabinet). How would I route the amp sim via the 610?

He could bring a cab I am sure if necessary.
Thank you!

What kind of amp sim? Does it have a line level input? I like to compress before the amp if possible, but an LA 610 has a line level output, which may or may not work well with your amp sim.

I would run line into the la-610, and record it, and then run it back into the simulator that way you get it good the first time and then can let the simulator mess it up.

My thoughts so far are

1. Channel Strip
2. Ampeg b15 or something with 2x10

This is a technique I prefer aswell, I love what you can do with the sansamp plugin on protools with the DI
