| Lives for gear | It's all about the Radio Shack 33-3032's. They work just like the senhiser (and sound almost exactally like them). And $15 each... -Chris Parsons |

| I like the EV ND408's for affordable. I like 414's for a little more money. On floor tom the ATM25 can be very nice too. |

| Studio Projects B1's and B3's totally rock on toms for recording. The B3 on the low tom is thunderous. Not in a sort of "good-for-the-money" sound, but in a great sound, period. We often run them through API's. We have over 200 mics here and the B3 is now the go-to mic for floor tom on a lot of sessions. The B1 is only $79 and the B3 is $159 – so if a drummer smacks one - big deal.

| I've used MD421, D2's and e504's. The 504's seem to lack the lowend of the other two, so I never liked them on a 16" tom. 14" might work... Greetings, Dirk

| Lives for gear | for affordable, the senn 604's are very good. 421's still workhorses. i am yet to try the atm25's but hear you need less Eq with them. i have tried a coles 4038 around 12" from the side of my floor tom and it had a cool open sound, at the same time i used a Royer 121 around 2' from my rack tom and no overheads. a bit of compression, 57 on the rim of the snare and D112 in the hole of kick, and the whole kit sounded cool. cymbals had a bit of Ringo wash but for what i was doing it worked out. sort of a Mick Fleetwood groove, not to many cymbals. have fun with it john |

| MD421's or SM57's. If these are out of your price range....take on a second job. |

| One with big hooves | I'm pretty unpicky. My usual setup would be 421's on the rack toms with a D112, 414B/ULS or TLM103 on the floor tom. If I need the 421's for other things I'll use SM57's or maybe the 504's if I can't fit either a 421 or 57. One of these days I want to try my AT4031's on toms.

| Gear maniac | CAD M179 hands down. Sounds amazing. Great attack with full, round tone. Perfect. Makes me smile every time I hear them through the monitors. |

| CAD M179s, about $150 each, I prefer them to 57s or 421s. Especially on big floor toms, they really capture the boom as well as the attack. |

| Lives for gear | Sennheiser e609. The e604s don't sound as good. E-V N/D 408s are nice too. Beyer M201s are stellar on rack toms with a 421 or D-12e on floor. Sennheiser MD 409s are really great if you can find them. |

| 421s are great SM57s work fine, too 604s are good, too 414s sound good, but are expensive overkill I have a pair that were destroyed by an an amature drummer. I re-built thm and got a feree I like the post about using ELA M251s.... ![]() As if you have enough to record toms with them. If you do you are a fool if you use them in close. Of course they'd sound good, but WHY use them? |

| Personally, I usually end up with the CAD's, but there are lots of good choices. You can listen to almost 10 of them here and decide which suits your esthetic : Drum Mic Madness!!!!

| I don't believe I've ever tried that match. Next time I record some drums I can't wait to give it a shot. Sure seems like a perfect fit BTW, for rack toms I've been diggin' Oktava MC-012's quite a bit.

| I have typically used 57's when I use tom mics. I think the Kel HM-1 would be pretty good but I need to find find good inline pads for them to use them as anything but OH's on drums.
