Say, what's this guitar sound?

okay, i think it may actually be a bass, but whatever...

perhaps some of you might be able to listen to this soundclip and give some input as to what gear-wise is making a sound along the lines of this. the best i can describe is kind of a bass heavy, but smooth distortion/overdrive. only i can't seem to quite nail it down.

the first track is from a song by aimee mann...the guitar(or bass) is panned soft right and comes in with the lines "you give me..." and ends on "...option to indulge".

the second clip is from the rentals...this one's a bit more distorted and is used throughout the song, but seems to follow the same idea.

thanks!

Try driving a single 15" or 18" speaker into distortion w/ your guitar. I've recorded tones similar to this by putting a tube screamer in front of a bass amp and driving it into that kind of dry, grugy sound...

Yeah, I like that tone.

I like to run a P-Bass thru a Marshall half stack and a B-15 at the same time and mix the result. Seems like it always mixes best in the air, like into one mic a little ways out into the room. Might take a DI if I were doing that, though.

You could get close that way. I think you need the 12" or even a 10" voiced for guitar to get the top right, and then a cab voiced for bass to maintain the low end. Or not as the case may be.

If I were doing the first deal, I might be tempted to bury a sawtooth wave synth way down in there.

The Rentals are cool.

I've gotten sounds similar to this by lining a bass, then using an overdriven amp modeler to mix in some buzz (on of the few good uses of a modeler, I think).
