Weathervane Multitracks - Creepoid

Hi folks,

Back with some new Shaking Through fun on the way. This time the band is Philadelphia psych-folk-grunge band, Creepoid, curated by the hippest Philadelphia DIY promoter in the universe, Sean Agnew of R5 Productions! The song, Old Tree, was produced by Kyle "Slick" Johnson (Cymbals Eat Guitars, Modest Mouse, Rogue Wave) with engineering assistance from our very own young superstar, Jonathan Low - and again, like last month's Family Band recording, I didn't lift a finger. That's right: no Brian on this recording, either.

Creepoid is Sean Miller, Peter Joseph Urban IV, and husband-wife rhythm section Pat and Anna Troxell. They play a very unique blend of Miller’s psych-folk with everyone else’s hard-core / grunge … It’s super fun.

The feature videos and MP3 won't come out til Tuesday October 18, but like we've been doing a while now, we are sharing the raw tracks BEFORE we put up OUR final mix and mix-stems. … So here it is again! Go nuts! Do what you do and don't worry about what we do! We were blown away by Great great river, and Manuke's remixes of Family Band last month... more of that, PLEASE!

Again, I’ll update this thread with the final mix, mix stems and feature video links as we release them.

Like before, thanks to Telefunken Elektroakustik, we all had the incredible experience of being able to choose from almost their whole line of microphones, as well as a D.W. Fearn VT2 and VT7. Kyle Johnson brought in some excellent crappy mics to use alongside some of the best mics any of us have tried. This is a super cool recording because of it!

Thanks again to Scott Wilson from Scratch Studio in NY for hosting the files again.... Scott, dear great man, you rule!

Really vibey song! I probably won't have time to join the fun this time... I'm seriously packed with stuff to do... It sucks!

I'm downloading the raw-tracks for future fun...

Keep it up guys! Love your work and commitment!

Here is what I made of the 'Old Tree'. I really love your hihat! It sounds almost liquid... Critique is welcome.

Is anyone else having trouble downloading the multitracks? Whenever I go to the multitrack link it keeps timing out and not loading the page.

Edit - Just tried it again and all seems to be working now. Time to get mixing!

Cool music. It's great to hear how different people prioritize different instruments - particular the interlude(?) at 1:20 - 2:20.

And because people have asked for critiques.. Just briefly, here's a couple of things that I heard. BTW these are on my ordinary computer speakers. Feel free to disagree. I'm no pro.

Once a roadie - I think the drums in the interlude 1:20 to 2:20 are too loud (but i like the cymbal hits there and wish they were mine).

Michael ellis - A couple of snare fills seem a little brittle or tight for me compared to the snare hits either side eg @ 2:20

It's easy to seem negative when critiquing but really there's some good stuff going on.

Of course, mine is wide open for fault finding if anyone wants to share their thoughts. Does my edit work at 3:30?

Cheers man, appreciate it. Still a month away from my studio being completed, cannot wait to step in there. Only a project studio mind you. How are you getting on with the tubetraps/attack wall? (assuming that is your setup in the picture)

Yes, that is my 'studio'. The Attack Wall is probably one of the best investments I've made. They are wonderful! Not cheap but definitely worth every cent.

^^ Aphex Twin took a whole lot of sedatives and decided to make a dance tune. Nice work man, really atmospheric/haunting

All awesome work, everyone. Manuke... crazy. I like that. Keep up the exploration! Seriously.

So just so everyone knows there's a new technical video. I updated the original post.

Wlouch, thanks, that's a great compliment indeed.
Brian, thanks.
To the band, my apologies for doing that to your song. Actually think it's the best tune of the series, really good stuff.

It's really our pleasure. I just wrote this same thing in another thread here - I really do hope we can keep doing it. These recordings are the best I get to be a part of. I truly believe that, and I really appreciate the people that help us make it happen (like WXPN radio, Telefunken, AEA, and others).

Hello. I did a mix out of this one too. It's always good to stretch out from your comfort zone and do some different stuff. I come from modern rock scene and
have lately been mixing some R'n'B stuff. These WV multitracks nicely cover the "grittier" music styles which need a very different approach than most of the
"cleaner" genres

Old Tree MixOff by Spede on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

Some of your older multitracks have been posted to the mixoff.org forum. I'd suggest that you do the same for the rest of the tracks. They might get some attention
there too. I would've mixed this earlier if I had knew they existed

EDIT: Just watched the technical video and wanted to mention that I used only the SM7 on the lead vocal; saw no problem the singers voice

Manuke, your stash definitely has some very potent stuff in it. Hell of a job on that mix as far as atmosphere goes.

With the fan boy glasses on:

I just joined gearslutz because of this great tune and the great work surrounding it. This is my first gearslutz post.

I just have to say that for people who grew up listening to violent femmes, pixies, sonic youth and more lately perhaps white stripes the WEATHERVANE project and very much 'Old Tree' may bring a whole new dimension to 'remix'

I intend using the multitracks for teaching recording and mixing.

This is one of the most successful atmospheric tunes I've heard for a while and the recording is just beautiful. Have downloaded the multitrack and track sheet.

With the quality of the remixes just in a few days there will probably be no point in me uploading one!
