A song I recorded and mixed...

Just finished an album with SEEKA, a band from Amsterdam, Holland. We've put a lot of time and effort in it, stoked about their new video and proud of those guys! Check it out:

Also, this band is the first in our "Walk in - Play - Walk out" series of sessions!

Check out this preview: SEEKA - MEMORIZE THIS MOMENT @ WALK IN - PLAY - WALK OUT - YouTube

It sounds really good to me, great job! The only thing I could complain about (I'm being picky) is I would of liked to hear a little more separation between the bass and kick when things got a bit heavy arrangement wise, but that can be hard with a synth going in the background.

Great stuff! I really like the song. Sounds like a mixture of Foo Fighters and QOTSA with a little indie thrown in.

Sounds great! I like the song and think the overall approach to the mix is perfect for it (lotsa guitar!), and really like what you did with the vocals. I could use a bit more kik (though it's difficult in such a dense mix - perhaps could side-chain so other bass sounds duck a bit?), but I like that the drums sound like a cohesive kit (i.e., does't sound like kik, snare. etc. were all effectively different instruments - sounds like a real kit with an overall kit sound, while still maintaing enough balance/separation for everything to be heard). Nice work.

If these guys come through town I'll check out their live show - I bet it's very energetic based on that track . . .

Thanks all! Indeed, drums....I hear what you say about the kick, but its what rumbletone noticed: I want to sound the kit as one instrument. I've tried to give the kick some more attention (because I like em in your face) but that was very hard with all the stuff constantly going on and it sounded too loud/popped out no matter what I tried. Just didnt fit the song.

And yes, those guy are energetic!

Awesome energy.

The cheesy synth doubling the vocal melody cracks me up too.

Actually, I like the drum sound quite a bit.

Thanks Apollo...I like it too, drumsound fits the song now. As you mix you always can go so many ways but this seemed to work best. and yes, the synthsound and the pitch on the leadvocal really do it in this song.

That video was awesome. I was completely hooked by the stuffed animals for an audience.

It was hard for me to critically listen to the recording through the crappy data format on YouTube so I can't say much more than the song sounded like it rocked and the recording seemed like it was good.

Sounds great! Can you tell us a little about the lead vocal processing/mixing? (I know the BGV's have a lot to do with the final sound on this one...)

-Compression amounts
-Reverb.. Delay
-Fader riding/automation
-Anything else that comes to mind!

I'm just always interested to hear tricks and techniques folks are using.

Thanks for sharing

If you check out the live-session in the studio you can see a bit: SEEKA - MEMORIZE THIS MOMENT @ WALK IN - PLAY - WALK OUT - YouTube

Its a Fender twin reverb amp, A Royer 121 and a SM57 in front of it through my MCI preamps, through Neve 33609 compressors, through Lynx Aurora to Protools...

Thanks for the cool replies all, good to hear. True, youtube isnt the best tho 1080 playback helps.

Compression amounts: not to much while tracking and not to much while mixing but pretty much on the masterbuss. Also, Darius @ Amsterdam Mastering did a good job.

Reverb/delay. I hardly do reverb. Its all slapdelays and short delays. There may be some long delays but they're for the obvious fx.

Fader automation....pretty much on everything. Vocal is constantly moving because of all the other things going on in the song.

Although the band played all the songs together with some guitardubs added later the same day we tried a lot of things to get to a certain sound. Sometimes more extreme, sometimes laidback....we tried a lot. Every song on their album is different compared to eachother, so we took our time. Before we started mixing I just bought some PMC monitors and a Cranesong Avocet which helped me quite a lot :-) Also Alvin, the leadsinger/composer, was there all the time and you can't beat having the composer with you while mixing: Its their song, they know what they want to hear so that helped also.

Cheers,
Sven
